Anaya felt like such an idiot. Why did she feel the need to explain herself right now? Perseus was obviously in emotional pain. Surely he didn't care if she left or came. He probably didn't even notice her being here, but she couldn't stay away. She wanted to be there for him. She didn't expect him to say anything, or even show any sign he heard her. He hadn't spoken in days, unless he talked to the chief earlier. So when he squeezed her hand, Anaya looked up at him, meeting his eyes. Somehow, she understood what he couldn't say. She nodded a little and squeezed his hand back, looking down at his hands again with a small smile on her face. --- previously stated time jump (hahaha) --- Anaya didn't know how long Perseus had to stay at the infirmary. With two broken legs, it definitely wouldn't be a quick healing process and after the first week, Anaya and Illyana were sent on a mission. (Anaya suspected the healers might have asked the chief to come up with something to get her out of the infirmary) She loved going on missions and helping people, but Perseus was always in the back of her mind. Had he spoken yet? Did he smile at someone? Once they returned from their missions or she finished her duties for the day, she always went to go visit him. Her visits were typically the same thing. Walk in, greet him with a smile, sit down and take his hand and sit in silence until the healers made her leave. Sometimes, however, things changed. People started coming to visit him and, while Anaya knew she couldn't always keep him to herself, she hated having to step away. When someone walked into the infirmary, she would rise and squeeze his hand, then let go and move out of the way. Sometimes the person would give her a look that meant she should leave. Anaya hated it when that happened, but she left, always returning later. As soon as she could, or once she saw the person walking around camp. She wasn't allowed to hang around outside the infirmary anymore, which made it harder for her to come back as soon as they left. One day she was sitting beside Perseus, holding his hand as usual when some girl burst into the room. Startled, Anaya jumped to her feet, heart racing as she squeezed his hand before stepping to the side. The girl didn't pay any attention to Anaya, instead rushing in and draping herself across him. Anaya swallowed hard, averting her eyes as she swallowed down the instant jealousy. The girl went on and on as she spoke to Perseus and Anaya clenched her jaw. Then, she heard a voice in her mind. A voice that wasn't Illyana's. Anaya gasped softly as she heard Perseus addressing Shenya. What? How could she hear him? She glanced over at him, but he was sitting as he always did, staring at the ceiling. Since the girl hadn't responded in outrage to his outburst, Anaya realized she did hear his thoughts. She watched Perseus carefully as the girl continued to speak, kissing his hand and trying to meet his eyes. Maybe she should have stepped out for this girl. Luckily, she left after a little bit of getting no response from him. Anaya slowly walked over to him, sitting down and taking his hand in hers gently. A thought had occurred to her while that blonde girl was there for the last few minutes and she wanted to get it in the open. "Hey, Corporal Perseus, I ... I was just thinking. I don't want to intrude on you when you want to be alone, or if someone comes to visit that you'd rather me not be around here for. Could you ... maybe give me some sort of sign if you want me to leave." Her voice started coming out in more of a rush and she could feel her cheeks turning pink. "I mean, I don't expect you to talk or something, but like if you clenched your fist or blinked for a long time or something ..." she exhaled, feeling like a bother. Anaya sighed. "You don't have to though. I just don't ever want to be in the way." Anaya shrugged, trying to make this seem like it wasn't a big deal. But, to her it was. PERSEUS CAREW

Anaya was back at his side nearly as soon as the pigtail girl left. Her hand went into his, it's designated spot. Then she started talking. That wasn't something she normally did. She would sit with him in silence for hours. Probably longer if the healers didn't shoo her away, fearing she would forget to take care of herself and get hurt herself on a mission. As it was, when she began to ramble, he was listening. He even looked at her. I wish she would never leave. Maybe that would make it so some of these other people wouldn't stay long. He told Shenya, wincing slightly at the pain of not getting a response from his dragon. Percy squeezed her hand, wishing that would convey his thoughts. But maybe next time someone came he would just hold her hand tighter. That was something he could do, even if he couldn't warn her before hand. How is it, Shenya, that Anaya understands? I love you." He looked away from Anaya as his vision fuzzed with tears then cleared again as they rolled down his cheeks. anaya isobel morne

Was it strange that she considered it a little bit of a triumph that he looked at her when she spoke? Anaya did notice just a few minutes ago that he wouldn't look at the blonde girl when she spoke to him. Now that she thought about it, did he ever turn to look at people when they spoke to him? Well, he was looking at her, and she was glad, even if she did feel somewhat embarrassed. She was looking at his hands when she heard his voice again in her mind. This time, she could hear the slight echo, the evidence that Illyana told her was proof that she was listening or speaking telepathically. Really? Her telepathic abilities were starting NOW?! Now, when all she was trying to do was be supportive of her best friend? She didn't want to listen to his private conversations with his dragon, but at the same time ... she didn't know how to turn it off. Her only relief came in the fact that she knew he couldn't hear her thoughts. Telepathic abilities came in stages. Listening and speaking were separate. His words echoed in her mind, saying that he wished she wouldn't leave and Anaya closed her eyes for a moment, trying to figure out how to block his thoughts. She didn't want to be listening in like this, even if it helped her know what he wanted when he wouldn't speak. She nodded, eyes still closed, when he squeezed her hand, trying to show that she thought she understood. She glanced back up to meet his eyes and offered the tiniest smile. Then he was asking Shenya how Anaya could understand and she started to lose it. She couldn't listen to things like this, especially when they were followed with him telling Shenya he loved her. She noticed him look away, saw the tears and felt ever more guilty for listening in. "Oh my gosh, I'm sorry," she breathed, reaching over with her free hand and wiping away his tears, even as her own started falling. "I didn't mean to make you cry. I'm so sorry." Okay, really she was apologizing for something entirely different from his crying. She was apologizing for listening in, but he didn't have to know that. She'd probably never tell him about this. Percy couldn't stop the tears now that they were here. He didn't even bother trying. This had happened to him so much recently, it was almost normal. Besides, trying to stop the tears seemed like a betrayal of Shenya. He turned his face away from Anaya, even as she wiped the tears from his cheeks. He didn't even notice her own tears. Come home, please.--- Three months later --- All dragon Riders had accelerated healing. It came in handy as they often did things that other people would think of. Like ride bareback on a large scaley animal who could breath fire. Percy had used this blessing often in his time with Shenya. Now, unfortunately, it seemed that blessing was no longer his to claim. The healers had been excited at the rate of healing he had initially, but after a few weeks it slowed to what, they assured him, was a normal pace. Any other time Percy would have been itching to get out of his casts and get back out there. Now however, he didn't see what was out there worth anything. But, his body healed anyway. The healers had removed his casts a few days ago. They had him doing exercises daily as his muscles all over his body had atrophied to a point where he shook when he lifted anything heavier than a book. The healers assured him they would have him in fighting shape in no time. He didn't care. Without Shenya... Without Shenya he wouldn't be allowed back out into the work he loved. He couldn't do it without her anyway. Today was the day he was supposed to go for a walk outside. Great. That meant, not only did he have to go outside, but would have to interact with a person who was not Anaya, since he hadn't seen her in a few days. That probably meant she was out on a mission. Those were the worst days. No one to stem the tide of visitors. No one to sit with him in silence. No one to cry with. He sat on the edge of his bed, his too big pants tied up with a belt at his waist. He had a cane in his left hand and a healer was ready to help him walk on his right side. anaya isobel morne

It was three months after everything happened with Shenya. Three months since Perseus last spoke, smiled, or really showed any signs of wanting to live. She worried about him daily, but in all honesty there wasn't much Anaya could do for him. She tried, of course. She hoped her visits helped him, but there was no way of knowing for sure, except for the few times when he told "Shenia" that he appreciated her, or something along those lines. Anaya still felt guilty about listening in on him. She actually knew how to control her listening now ... but she couldn't help but listen now. It was her only way to check Perseus' mental status, which wasn't good. Still, life went on. Elin Dragon-Rider continued to send her and Lacey on missions. Most of them were short missions, complete in a day or less, but the one she was coming back from today? Yeah, that one lasted four days. She was anxious to get home, give her report and go see Perseus. He was supposed to get out of his cast and go walking this week. Had he already gone? Or was he still spending most of his time in bed. "I'm sure he's fine. You'll see him quite soon," Illyana soothed Anaya's worried mind. She hugged her dragon for a moment. "Thank you. I'm sure you're right." Before she knew it, they were back home. They gave their report to the chief, and as soon as they were dismissed Anaya jogged to the infirmary tent. The healers nodded as she approached. They didn't try to deny her entrance anymore, which was something she was happy about. She walked in to see Perseus sitting on the edge of his bed, appearing ready to leave? Or was he just getting back. "Hey," Anaya greeted softly. "Are we coming or going?" she asked the healer with a small smile. He muttered that they were about to go, but that if she wanted Anaya could walk with him instead. She looked at Percy. "Do you want me to go with you?" She didn't expect an answer. He hadn't said a thing since the night he'd found out about Shenya, but Anaya liked to think she was getting good at reading his expressions, or even just the look in his eye. She moved to his right side, holding out her arm. Maybe she'd just take that as a sign that he wouldn't mind her accompanying him, if he took her arm. She felt awkward, but tried not to let it show. Percy was just about to push himself off the bed and walk where ever this healer wanted him to go, when Anaya came in. Relief flooded through him, though not much of that relief showed in his expression, just a slight raise to his eyebrows, an anxious breath released. The healer left his side and Anaya to their spot, lifting her arm for him to take. He glanced at her face then focused on her arm, gripping it to help him stand up. It was more difficult that he would have thought possible, and he broke out in a sweat. Hopefully they weren't going to walk very far. He wasn't sure how far he could really go. They began to walk, slowly. The simple motion of lifting his leg, bending his knee, setting his leg back down, took all of his concentration. Amazing how quickly he could deteriorate. I'm glad you can't see me right now. You would be ashamed of me. I'm... I'm not as strong as I was. In any way."They left the infirmary door. He did not look up. Up was the sky, the clouds, and dragons. It used to belong to him. No longer. Now he was left here to rot on the ground. anaya isobel morne

Anaya liked to think that he looked just a little happier at the sight of her, but maybe that was just her mind. He didn't smile or even nod to her, but he did meet her eyes and lift his eyebrow. At least he noticed she was here. Sometimes she felt about as invisible as a ghost when she came, but she did it all the same, for him. It didn't hurt that Illyana was always encouraging her, telling her that Perseus needed a good friend he could count on right now. The smallest smile crossed her face when he took her arm, but it faded quickly when she saw how much of a struggle this was for him to stand up. She glanced to the healer, who was still standing in the room. He nodded that it was okay, mouthed and gestured that they should take about 10 minutes for their walk. She nodded, putting her free hand on top of Perseus' as they began to walk. It was slow going, but she didn't mind. She thought about talking to try and fill the silence, but then figured it was probably taking a lot of concentration for Perseus to walk right now. She froze for half a second when she heard him talking to Shenya again. Anaya wanted to shake her head and tell Perseus that Shenya would be proud of him for getting up and working on it, for not giving up, but she couldn't. Saying that would be admitting to him that she heard his thoughts. At least, she heard some of them. Maybe there were times when she missed his thoughts to Shenya. Once they made it out into the open air, Anaya took a deep breath. "Let's go this way," she muttered, leading him to the edge of camp and the forest. She always liked walking in the forest, but she wouldn't do that to him now. There were too many roots and such in the forest and Anaya didn't want him to have to deal with that. After what she thought was probably five minutes, Anaya paused. "Here, we should turn around," she suggested, helping him turn carefully. With her next step, she slipped on a rock underfoot and fell backwards. She squealed softly, until she hit the ground, her head hitting a large rock on the side of the path with a thunk. Everything went black. PERSEUS CAREW

Lift, bend, step. Lift, bend step. It felt like he had been walking for years when Anaya said they should turn around. She had lead them away from the main part of camp. It was not quite the forest, but also not the camp that was turning town. Just far enough away that there wasn’t anyone to see the miserable wretch he had become. Anaya stepped carefully, helping him turn around. He was more thankful than she could know for the help. She is too good to me. You always said I didn’t deserve a friend like her. You were ri—! He broke off as she slipped on a rock tumbling to the ground. His eyes went wide and he tried to grab for her. In fact, he did grab her, but his muscles were too weak to do anything more than let her slip through his fingers. In the motion of reaching for her, he threw himself off balance, falling to the ground just as he heard a nasty thunk. Heart beating quickly, breath coming in short gasps, he turned to see Anaya unconscious next to him, her head next to the offending rock that had caused her to slip. He crawled over to her, slower than he would have liked and felt at her throat. Her pulse pressed against his fingers, thankfully. He then gently touched the back of her head. No blood, which was good, just a bump, also good. Except she was not waking up. He looked around, hoping someone would walk by, anyone. but they were far enough away that no one was visible. He felt his shoulders slump. How was he going to get her help? He needed to wake her up. He didn’t have anything, except for his cane which was laying forgotten out of reach. ”A-Anaya.” he whispered, his voice husky and hoarse after 3 months of unuse. He gently patted her cheek, hoping that might do something. He couldn’t help her. Looking down at his weak muscles bound around his skinny arms he was suddenly disgusted with himself. How he had let it go this far? Now, when he was needed, he could do nothing. He made a vow, he would never be helpless again. And he would do whatever it took to make that come true. As long as it took. A quick glance showed him that there was a person, right at the edge of town. If he could get their attention, he could get help. ”HELP!” His loudest yell was pathetically quiet, his voice straining to even make that noise. Tears of frustration pricked his eyes. He was utterly useless. anaya isobel morne

Why didn't she see the rock? Maybe it was because she was distracted by the words Percy was saying to Shenya, about Anaya being a great friend to him. She felt all warm inside, happy that her efforts hadn't gone unnoticed, even though she did not expect him to actually tell her that, ever. Whether she was paying too much attention to his thoughts, or not enough attention to the ground, she fell. "Anaya, wake up! Are you okay?" Illyana's concerned voice was the first thing she heard, though at the same time she heard another voice, familiar but not at the same time. She hadn't heard it in so long, but it whispered her name and her heart warmed at the sound. Anaya felt a pat on her cheek, but she still didn't open her eyes. "I'm okay Illyana. I think ... I think I just bumped my head. No worries," she tried to reassure her dragon. Illyana's worry lessened, but it didn't go away completely. Then she heard Perseus shout for help. His shout was quiet, but she could tell he was giving it all that he had. She moaned softly, turning her head toward him and slowly blinking her eyes open. "Corporal?" she asked, eyebrows furrowed as she looked over at him. She groaned, moving to try and sit up. "Perseus?" Of course she would be the one to complicate things, falling when she was supposed to be the steady one. Her eyes widened when she remembered what happened exactly. They were on a walk. His first walk since breaking his legs and she fell, probably pulling him down with her. Her forehead creased with worry as she looked at him. "Oh, I'm so sorry! I can't believe I tripped. Are you okay? How are your legs?" She couldn't believe she'd been so careless. What if he got hurt worse because of her. "Did I make you fall?" Wait. He wasn't talking, was he? Or ... since he was calling for help a few seconds ago did that mean he'd talk now? Wait. Didn't he say her name too? Blast her stupid headache! Why was she asking so many questions? "Sorry, you don't have to answer any of that," Anaya said, blushing a little. PERSEUS CAREW

She woke up. Blessedly, she woke up. She groaned and then opened her eyes, calling him corporal (not that he deserved the title anymore) then by his name as she tried to sit up. He was so relived that he didn’t even try to help her, he just let his head slump forward as he took deep calming, relieved breaths. She shot off a string of questions at him. Part of him, the part he had been, the part Shenya would have been ashamed of, didn’t want to answer. That part of him was the useless, pathetic wimp that lead him to where he was now. He would not give into that part of him again. Taking one last breath he looked up at her and ignoring her questions whispered ”Are you okay?”That was really all that mattered, if she was okay. He could heal, he could get better. But if something happened to Anaya now... best not to think about that. Then he realized, he probably should take stock of himself. He couldn’t afford to spend another few months laid up in bed. He slowly poked and prodded his legs, his arms, his torso. Everything seemed fine. ”I think I am okay.” His voice came out as a rasp, but it came. He used it. He was not going to give into that wretch again. anaya isobel morne

He was so quiet as he sat beside her, breathing deeply. Anaya wanted to try and force him to answer. She wanted to hear his voice again, but she forced herself not to try. She believed he trusted her, that he felt comfortable around her. She would not ruin that by trying to make him talk when he didn't want to. What mattered right now was his comfort, not hers. Anaya rolled her shoulders as she took stock of herself. Everything seemed fine, she thought. It was hard to be entirely sure when she wasn't trying to stand up yet. She jumped, gasping a little when Perseus spoke. She hadn't been expecting that. Anaya looked up at him, nodding automatically and then grimacing a little as she reached up to gingerly touch the back of her head. "Yeah, I'm okay. Just a bit of a headache," she answered, trying to pretend that it wasn't a big deal he just spoke. Part of her wanted to reach over and hug him tight, welcome him back. But ... he didn't seem ready for that, even now. She watched as Perseus then seemed to turn his attention to himself, admitting that he thought he was okay. She smiled, reaching over to touch his hand. "I'm glad. Sorry if I made you fall with me," she added sincerely. "Are you ready to get up and head back?" She wasn't quite sure what made the difference, what got him to talk again, but she wanted to encourage it as much as possible. If he didn't answer her questions, that was fine, but if he did, that was even better. PERSEUS CAREW

”yeah, let’s go.” He said to her. He reached over and was able to grab his cane, if only barely, then got it under him and used it and Anaya to help him stand up. Once standing he took another breath. Anaya was okay. He was okay. everyone was fine. Almost everyone... He shocked himself to realize that in those moments on adrenalin he hadn’t thought of Shenya once. It hurt to think that he had forgotten her, but it was also sort of freeing. He didn’t have to hurt all the time. What had it been that had made him focus on something else? The rush of danger, the panic of the unknown. Those were what he needed. How was he going to get them? That was the question he pondered on his way back to the infirmary. As he walked another thought kept popping into his mind. ”Thank you.” HE whispered to Anaya. It wasn’t much, considering all she had done for him, but it was the best he could do. anaya isobel morne

Anaya couldn't help but smile when Perseus answered her out loud. She loved actually hearing the sound of his voice. It was so much better than overhearing his thoughts to Shenya and there was so much less guilt involved. She stood up as he reached for his cane, taking his arm to try and help him to his feet. He was silent on their walk back to the infirmary, but that wasn't really a surprise to Anaya. He'd been silent for the past three months. She didn't expect him to suddenly grow talkative, she was just glad that he'd answer some of her questions now, or at least respond to her a little bit. He seemed to be coming out of his shell a little, becoming more like the way he used to be. Then, just before they reached the infirmary, he spoke again. Anaya turned as he did, that small smile returning to her face. She didn't know what exactly he was thanking her for, but she didn't care. She nodded, grimacing a tiny bit at the pain in her head as she did so. She needed to stop nodding for a day or two. "Of course," she answered simply. "You're my closest friend. I'm here for you." Anaya wasn't exactly sure if he saw her that way. They were friends, sure, but closest friends? What if he didn't like that? She pretended that there wasn't a question about it. She squeezed his arm as the two walked into the infirmary. A healer greeted them as they entered. "So, how was your walk?" He asked, glancing at Perseus before turning his real attention to Anaya. She paused, curious about whether Perseus would answer him or if she should. PERSEUS CAREW (we wanna start the next one? Where Percy keeps putting himself in danger?)

—-Three Month Later, 6 Months after The Light Goes OutThe work it took for Percy to build his body back to something useable was difficult. And it took time. But he had finally passed the Healers stupid tests and they had declared him ready for active duty. Something he had quickly gone to tell Elin. Or rather his superior and let them tell the Chief. To his surprise and relief a mission was assigned to him almost immediately. Which he had successfully completed earning himself only a few broken ribs and some scared egos. If his mission companions couldn’t take a little constructive criticism then they should be here. The Next mission had been only a few days later. Once again successful. Sure he had taken a gash in his forearm that had made some of the healers pale, but they had patched him up rather nicely and it was now only a bright red scar. It was too bad his mission companions thought the risk he took was too much. They weren’t the ones getting praise from their commander for a job well done. They weren’t the ones who had not only rescued all of the captive slaves without casualties, but also driven the dragon away never to return. As it so happened, he had completed 7 successful mission since being reinstated. Make that 8. Walking back into camp Percy couldn’t hide his satisfaction. A smug grin on his face showed the world what he thought of the task he had just completed. True, his hand smarted, but nothing was broken. Just some swollen joints from punching that dragon. Honestly, it could have been much worse, that dragon he had fought off had scared away three dragon riders before he had come along. I’m not weak anymore, Shenya. No more. His companions trailed in behind him, giving him dark glances. They hadn’t been nearly so picky about his methods when he was shielding them from the torrent of fire that dragon had aimed at them. But now that the danger was over, everyone was a critic. “You should have waited for back up.” “Someone could have been hurt.” “We weren’t supposed to draw attention to ourselves.” Well, it wasn’t his fault the dragon had spotted them and attacked. He just did the best with what he could. Not bothering to say good by to his companions he went straight for the healers tent. They would probably drop dead with surprise at the fact that he wasn’t bleeding. Several girls stopped and waved at him as he walked by. One of which looked familiar. She had pigtails and was nearly drooling when he glanced their direction. Pathetic. He rolled his eyes then strode into the healers tent. ”Patch me up quickly. I haven’t eaten all day.”Never helpless again. I will make sure of it.anaya isobel morne

Anaya was going crazy with worry. Sure, Perseus seemed to have turned a critical point. He was finally taking care of himself, getting himself into good shape, which was a wonderful thing, but at the same time it wasn't. He was constantly on missions and, while that was a good thing, he'd come back from each and every one injured. Not all the injuries were terrible, but apparently they were unnecessary. Anaya talked with the people he worked with. Perseus was being reckless and it scared her. He threw himself into situations, endangering himself when he didn't have to. At first, she thought his companions were exaggerating, but he'd been on many missions now and everyone said the same thing. That wasn't a coincidence. She knew he was back today when she heard him talking to Shenya. Anaya cringed. His words were not reassuring to her. Yes, he was strong. That didn't mean that he could come out of every situation if he wasn't careful! She sighed and started to make her way to the infirmary, not excited about what she was about to do. Elin Dragon-Rider came up to her earlier today, asking her to talk to Perseus about how he treated people. That wasn't really a surprise to Anaya, but she didn't see this as her place and she was not excited to do it. On her was, she ran into some of his companions. They were frustrated and told her exactly what happened, how he'd punched a dragon in the face, how he rushed into the action and dragged everyone in with him. They'd all been in unnecessary danger, and a lot of that had to do with him. Anaya's blood boiled with anger. How. Dare. He. She nodded to the others and then stormed off toward the infirmary. She reached it and asked the healers outside if Perseus was in there. They rolled their eyes and said yes and Anaya found herself pacing around outside the tent. She was trying to get herself calmed down enough to go inside and talk to him, but she couldn't. Then he walked out the door. Before she was calmed down. She glanced over at him, the anger flaring up again. She stormed right up to him and slapped his face. "What is wrong with you?!" Anaya demanded, glaring at him. She never thought she'd be angry at Perseus Carew, but she was right now. Dangerously so. "Do you really think what you're doing is healthy? Or that it's what Shenya would want? You hurting yourself and putting yourself in danger every time you leave the camp? I just ... I can't believe you!" She threw her hands in the air, shaking her head. She wanted to slap him again, but she couldn't. She couldn't do that. Instead, she turned and started stalking away. PERSEUS CAREW
