Anaya is thin and lean, with the build of a warrior. She’s 5’7” tall with long brown hair that has a red shine to it and piercing blue eyes. Her expression is almost always serious, but once you get past that, Anaya has a very playful, fun side to her. As a general rule, she doesn’t concern herself much with her clothes, which results in her often being seen in worn and battered jeans and shirts. However, she loves red leather. Jackets, vests, it doesn’t really matter. It it’s red leather, she’ll wear it until it’s so battered that it can’t be used any longer. Anaya has a strong affinity for weapons. She prefers guns and knives and constantly has several of each hidden on her person, just so she’ll be prepared for any situation that may arise. She also has a gift for improvisation and using that, she can make almost anything into a decent weapon in a short amount of time. Anaya is usually found on her own, scoping out landscapes and investigating anything that seems interesting to her.
[break][break]
Anaya has a very active, adventurous personality. She likes to try new things and see new places, looking for a place where she can fit in (though no one knows this but her). Along with this, she is quite spontaneous, often becoming distracted by new things and making decisions instantly about people, places, and things. She is never content sitting in the background and waiting for others. Instead, she chooses to be involved in everything she can, aiding others when possible, but keeping her own safety as her main goal. After all, Illyana did give her life to protect Anaya and the others. Allowing herself to die for nothing would be a poor way to show her gratitude. Anaya is exceptionally strong and agile for her age and size, moving faster than most people expect, which gives her a great advantage during any battle. Even without the enhanced abilities from a bonded Dragon, Anaya is a skilled hand-to-hand fighter and a fair melee/projectile weapon user.
[break][break]
Once Anaya makes her mind up about something, it is very difficult to sway her. Once upon a time, her dragon Illyana helped her with this, often dissuading her from her more dangerous decisions. However, with Illyana’s death, Anaya’s determination is more firmly set than ever before. She rarely allows anyone even the opportunity to try and change her mind, especially when it comes to battle plans. She loves being in the middle of the fighting, it being a great distraction to her from her inner pain.
[break][break]
She could be described as an extroverted introvert. Anaya gets along well with people. She’s a natural leader and an inspiring figure, but she constantly tries to downplay this. She does go out of her way to meet new people and make them feel good, but she would almost always prefer to be on her own rather than with a group of people. This is a new development for her, a piece of her that changed when she lost Illyana. Though Anaya puts on a good “show” and seems to be perfectly recovered from her traumatic experience, she still feels broken and torn up inside. Illyana was her other half, her best friend and Anaya suffers greatly from her loss. Deeper than that, Anaya blames herself for the death of her dragon. She constantly replays her last battle with Illyana, thinking of more and more things she should have done, changes that could have resulted in Illyana’s survival. She mentally tortures herself with thoughts of what she should have done better and this shows in the way she behaves when she thinks she’s alone. Even worse than her guilt is the hole of emptiness and loneliness left by the loss of Illyana. When alone, her attitude darkens and she becomes distant from the world around her. This more commonly happens at night.
[break][break]
Anaya’s greatest fear is that she’ll lose her last link to Illyana, her ability to use telepathy. Miraculously, after Illyana died she still had the gift, but as time progresses Anaya can feel her ability for telepathy slipping away from her. As a result, she uses it as often as she can, preferring to speak to people’s minds than to speak to them out loud, though not everyone appreciates this. Still, she knows that if she stops she’ll lose the ability forever, so she constantly uses it in her fight to keep it.
[break][break]
Anaya doesn’t recall much from her childhood. She has an older sister, Lacey, and they have been together for as long as she can remember. She vaguely remembers living in the Human Underground with her family and having friends, but she never liked it down there. It was too stuffy and boring. She and Lacey left and eventually they found Excalibur. They both had the good fortune to bond with amazing Dragons. Anaya’s was named Illyana, a Mental Dragon who was skilled in telepathy. With time, Anaya also learned the gift and together, she and Illyana furthered the cause of Excalibur greatly with their strong telepathy. They were great spies and warned about attacks and strategies of the enemy. Telepathy was very useful in the middle of battle, they thought.
[break][break]
Fighting as a team with Lacey and Yansei was Anaya’s favorite thing to do. Forming a telepathic bond between the four of them, they were absolutely lethal in any combat situation. Anaya loved it- not so much for the fighting and the death- but for the rush that fighting gave her. The adrenaline was invigorating and she never turned down a fight for that reason. The only one that could convince her to do otherwise was Illyana.
[break][break]
Then everything changed forever. Months ago- months that seem like years to Anaya- the mighty four rode out on a scouting expedition. Anaya liked scouting almost as much as she liked fighting and she was excited for the feeling of freedom that accompanied her whenever she rode out with Illyana. At first, the trip went smoothly, but not for long. As they were scouting around a lake, they were attacked by Ryluth’s Dragons. Anaya and Illyana opened up their bond with Lacey and Yansei and the four commenced in battle, fighting in tandem. At first, the fight was going well for them, but then some of Ryluth’s Dragons realized that they were all linked together mentally. They changed their battle strategy and suddenly things were more difficult. They could no longer keep track of one another and in the commotion that ensued, Illyana was struck with a life-ending ball of fire.
[break][break]
Anaya sensed the fireball a moment before it hit Illyana, but there was nothing she could do. She shouted out in terror and then all order was lost and she felt Illyana die. Anaya froze as complete and utter agony racked through her body and soul. Her heart felt as though it was cracking and her head was ringing with the anguished shrieks of her lost dragon. She was gone, Anaya could feel that Illyana was gone, but she still heard her screaming in her mind. Anaya was frozen in place on Illyana’s back, unable to think clearly enough to even consider moving. Somewhere in the back of her mind she sensed that she was falling, that she should move, but her mind and body were aching from sudden loss. After what felt like a lifetime of falling, Anaya felt Illyana’s body crash into the lake and she was suddenly buried in the frozen water.
[break][break]
Brought back to her senses by the ice cold water, Anaya fought to swim to the surface. Grief still consuming her, she numbly swam to shore. When she finally arrived there, Illyana’s mental screams stopped, leaving behind a deep emptiness that was worse than the screaming. Anaya collapsed on the shore and sobbed, her body shaking ferociously as her heart continued to break. She heard the screeches of the battle raging above her, but she didn’t care. Illyana was gone. What else did she have to live for?
[break][break]
Eventually the fighting above stopped and Anaya sensed that the dragons were gone. The ones that killed Illyana were gone and there was nothing she could do about it. She couldn’t even punish them for what they had done to her, she’d lost her chance. As this realization swept through her, a dark fury took place of her pain. She lifted herself to her feet and turned to face the lake. Her heart crumbled at the sight of her Dragon floating in the lake, but it only served to further her resolve. Briefly, she allowed her eyes to search for Lacey and Yansei, but she couldn’t see them. She closed her eyes and reached out with her telepathy and could only find Lacey, who was unconscious. Satisfied that her sister still lived, Anaya turned away and walked into the forest.
[break][break]
For weeks she was consumed with the idea of finding the dragons that killed Illyana, that caused her such pain. Every day was a challenge as she learned to live on her own. She’d never been truly alone before and she struggled with loneliness, missing Illyana the most, but also aching for her sister in a way that was new to her.
[break][break]
Then one day Anaya ran into two young men who wouldn't leave her alone. They seemed determined to help her, though she didn't believe it possible. Eventually she gave up trying to get them to leave her and began to trust them. The two twins, James and Peter, became her closest confidantes ever, excluding her sister. After time, Anaya told them all her secrets. She told them about Excalibur, Illyana, her inner torment, her telepathy. They became the younger brothers she never had, even though they were only a year younger than she was.
[break][break]
After about seven months, Anaya, Peter and James ran into a small, nameless company of humans. The group wanted them to stay, to join them and after a while the three hesitantly agreed, feeling right about it for some reason. This group was unaffiliated with any other major group. Though they knew of Excalibur, they had no interest in joining them. They also disdained the Knights of Purity, believing them to be arrogant and foolish. Instead, this group’s goal was to survive the way humans used to. They did whatever necessary to survive and found abandoned places to inhabit. Sometimes they would go on raids and when they did this, Anaya was at the center of everything. She developed a trademark, a sign that she left behind so that it would be known that she was a part of the attack. Her trademark was her initials: AIM and it wasn’t long before she was well-known because of those letters.
[break][break]
While Anaya still believed in Excalibur’s cause, she couldn’t return there. The shame was too great. How could she explain to anyone that she allowed Illyana to die and didn’t do anything to stop it? Still, she longed for companionship, so she decided to stay with this company above ground.
