Anaya must be scared to death. When he hugged her she kind of froze up. Flying wasn't that big of a deal. Maybe if you had a fear of heights, but it could also be that it was just a new experience. He decided not to mention it, he wouldn't want to make her fear any worse. "Well, you bonded and that is the hardest part. Don't worry too much about it. There are steps to being in sync with your dragon when flying." He stepped back to Shenya, he just loved being close to her. He wasn't sure he ever wanted to be parted from her for any reason. "The first step is to get out there and work on moving together. See if you can anticipate which way she will move." He had helped several people begin flying with their dragons, and had found that if he told them the ultimate in flying they had a harder time just getting started. It was better to let people experience it and then work on it from there. He felt Shenya giving Illyana instructions. It was one thing to fly with a person and another thing entirely to fly with a Rider. anaya isobel morne

Anaya listened carefully as Corporal Perseus told her that bonding was the hardest part. Okay, that was definitely a relief. Bonding hadn't been too hard, so maybe that meant that this wouldn't be too bad either. She nodded as he explained a little more, saying that the goal was to be in sync with her dragon. "Okay, I can try to do that," she said, starting to smile a little. Was she really about to ride Illyana for the first time?! She glanced over to the big White dragon, who seemed to wink back over at her. A minute later, Illyana spoke to her, "Come on Anaya. Let's do this." There was excitement in her tone and Anaya found her excitement rising. She moved to Illyana and mounted carefully, getting into the saddle and securing the straps the way she was shown earlier. "I think I'm ready," she turned to look at the Corporal and Shenya, waiting for their signal, or something. PERSEUS CAREW

Anaya seemed eager. It was good for her to push through her fear. She got on her dragon and strapped herself in, good she had practiced that. Then she looked back at him, waiting for something. "I am your coach, not your dragon master. Go when you want!" He said waving his arms to make it clear that she should take off now. He turned away from her and the dragon, expecting them to start. Illyana knew what to do, even if she didn't know how to do it with a Rider. Shenya stood expectantly. You do realize she wasn't scared to ride her dragon? I am pretty sure she was scared of you! She nuzzled his chest as he wrapped his arms around her neck. Yeah right. Who would be scared of me? He swung onto her back and raised his eyes to the sky, watching for the newly airborne rider. anaya isobel morne

Corporal Perseus told her to go when she wanted and Anaya turned her attention to Illyana. "You ready?" she asked. Her dragon answered by taking off. At first, Anaya squealed. She wasn't scared, just taken a bit by surprise. It took only seconds for her squeal to turn into a delighted laugh. They were soaring, climbing higher and higher and Anaya closed her eyes, loving the feeling of the wind rushing through her hair. It was a rush! She glanced down at the land below them and grinned. Then she turned her attention to what Corporeal Perseus told her to do, to try and sense where Illyana was going to go next. She closed her eyes and just felt. "So, you like it?" Illyana asked. "I love it!" They flew for hours, and if her actual bonding with Illyana hadn't been proof to Anaya that she was meant to be a dragon rider, flying would be. She was meant to be in the air like this. Two Months Later Everything was black. There was no light. There was no air. There was no love. There was no meaning. Why? Why was that? Shenya. No answer Something pushed him along, something cold, wet, dark. It wasn't suffocating, though he felt it should be. It was a reflection of his heart. OOC: The Light Goes Out

Anaya and Illyana were out for their daily ride together. They both loved flying and still found great joy in riding the wind together. It was something they did daily. Sometimes they went on their own, sometimes other riders accompanied them. Their most common riding buddies were Corporal Perseus and Shenya. Over the past few months, the four of them grew quite close with one another. Perseus showed Anaya the ropes, much like Shenya and Illyana. Besides that, they all seemed to get along quite well. Today, Anaya and Illyana were alone when they saw a dragon in the distance. "Can you tell who that is?" Anaya asked curiously. Illyana had much better eyesight than she did. Illyana didn't answer right away. "I think ... Shenya," Her tone was hesitant, but at the mention of Shenya, a smile grew on Anaya's face. That meant the corporal was nearby. Maybe they'd be able to do something together. She noticed Illyana's distress about the same time that their speed increased dramatically. "Illyana?" Anaya asked, confused about why they were moving so quickly. She looked ahead, towards the Lake and it seemed that Shenya was landing or something. At least, she was headed toward the ground. Anaya didn't know what that meant yet, but she could sense Illyana's change of mood. Something was happening. "What's going on?" She asked a little louder, trying to get her dragon's attention. What she heard made her stomach roll. Shenya's voice saying in a desperate tone, "Save Perc!" Anaya's eyes widened. Every instant Illyana was moving faster and faster, but there was no dragon in sight anymore and they still weren't particularly close to the lake. It took a few minutes for them to arrive, by which time there was no sign of a dragon. "Corporal? Perseus!?" Anaya shouted, her eyes searching the banks, the water, everything. It was Illyana that saw him first, floating in the water. "There, Anaya." Illyana approached him, lifting him out carefully with a claw and took him to the beach. Anaya dismounted quickly, rushing to his side. "Corporal Perseus? Are you okay?!" He was breathing, that was good. She didn't know what else to check. She wasn't a healer! Anaya wasn't prepared for this kind of a situation. "Corporal?!"PERSEUS CAREW

Something lifted him from the darkness. Light pierced through his eyelids, creating a red haze. Then he felt something hard beneath him, a pain shooting from his legs. He didn't react. The pain was right. Everything should hurt. "Corporal? Perseus?" Who was that? Shenya? No answer. Something was wrong. Something was very, very wrong. He felt his body convulse on its own, forcing water from his lungs with a retching motion. The pain renewed in his legs. His eyes flickered open once to see a white dragon, a beautiful girl, and... emptiness. He slid his eyes closed again, letting unconsciousness claim him before he could think about that empty space. anaya isobel morne

He didn't react at all to her words. Anaya worried over him, not knowing what to do that could possibly make him any better. She wasn't a healer! She didn't know anything about this sort of thing. Even not being a healer though, his legs were contorted at unnatural angles. They were probably broken, and who knew if he had more damage. She glanced over to Illyana, who was watching her in silence, which was odd. Why wasn't she saying anything. "Illyana, he needs to get to the infirmary. Where's Shenya? I know she won't want us to take him." Shenia would want to do it herself. Anaya might not know the dragon as well as she knew the corporal, but she knew that Shenya loved her rider. So ... why was she allowing him to float in the lake? Suddenly her attention was torn from Illyana and her question when Corporal Perseus started to shake as he choked out water. She tried to turn him on his side, to help him. His eyes opened for a second, but then rolled back up into his head and closed. He ewas unconscious. Anaya could sense Illyana's distress mingling with her own. Something was really wrong here and she needed to know what it was. "Illyana, where IS she? Tell me," Anaya insisted, even as dread started to fill her. Her dragon answered with a sigh. "Shenya is ... gone. She died." Anaya's eyes widened and she looked down to Perseus in horror. No ... "We need to get him to the infirmary," her mental voice was choking with emotion, but Anaya tried not to show it. "Help me." Somehow, Anaya and Illyana got him into the saddle and Anaya sat behind, holding him tight. As they flew back to Excalibur, tears flowed down her face, onto his already soaked clothes. When they got to the infirmary, the healers told Anaya to leave them to work, but she refused. "I'm not leaving him. He's my best friend," she said stubbornly. Illyana went to tell Ryagin and Elin what happened, and she sat by Perseus' bedside whenever the healers let her, holding his hand gently as she tried not to think about what he'd go through when he woke up. It was dark when Percy blinked his eyes open. Canvas was above him. The Infirmary? That made sense. He often ended up here much to Shenya's distress. And Anaya's more recently. He blinked a few more times, adjusting his eyes to being used. What had happened? Had he been on a mission? Had he-- Shenya?! His eyes went wide, his mouth opening in a silent scream of horror. Where was she? What had happened? Smile Perc. It let’s them know they haven’t won.
No. No. No. His eyes darted around the room, searching for her. She had to be here. His breathing came in short gasps of panic. Where was she? His eyes fell on Anaya. "Where-- Where is she?" His voice was hoarse. Tears pricked at his eyes. He didn't even listen for the answer she might give. He screamed. anaya isobel morne

Anaya sat at his bedside all day. All afternoon, all evening and into the night. The healers assured her that Corporal Perseus would be fine, that he was just healing and that it would take time. They told her that she could go to her own tent and come back in the morning, but Anaya would not be dissuaded. So they brought her food throughout the day, though the food always came with a lecture about how she should go home. She couldn't. Perseus was her closest friend (apart from Lacey and Illyana) and he lost his dragon today. Somehow, she died and Anaya couldn't leave him alone to face that fact whenever he woke up. She wouldn't run that chance. When he woke up, she didn't notice at first. She was finishing a piece of bread from her dinner. She'd saved it to help keep her awake when she got tired tonight. She didn't want to risk the chance of running when Perseus woke up. So she didn't notice when he blinked his eyes and when his mouth opened wide. It was when he started gasping in breaths that Anaya's attention snapped to him. His eyes were searching the tent and Anaya swallowed hard, noticing the panicked look in his eyes. "C-Corporal-" she started, before he even spoke to her. Then he was asking where "she" was. There was no question in Anaya's mind about who he was talking about. Tears slipped down her cheeks as he started to scream. Anaya's hands blindly searched for his hands and once she found them, she held on tight. "I'm sorry. I'm so so sorry," she breathed, though she knew he couldn't hear her. Even if he did, she had a feeling that he was upset enough he wouldn't want to hear her apologies. She didn't know what else to say though. She couldn't imagine what he was going through. "I'm here for you," she muttered a bit later. Not that it would make a difference. PERSEUS CAREW

His scream ended in sobs. Doctors crowded around him, trying to help him be more comfortable, holding him down so his frantic thrashing wouldn't injure his legs any more. He threw a few of them off, whipping his arms out. She was out there. She had to be out there. Never mind he couldn't hear her in his thoughts. Never mind there was an empty, gaping hole where she had always been. Finally they tied his arms and legs down and forced him to drink something they said would help him calm down. He didn't want to calm down. He wanted to find Shenya. She was out there all alone, and they had left her out there. It was a little later, when his desperate sobbing had turned to shuttering breaths and tired dry eyes and had no more tears, when he noticed Anaya there. Still. He locked eyes with her, needing something real. He didn't say anything. His voice was so hoarse now, he couldn't talk if he wanted to. He just kept eye contact, and opened his hand hoping she would take it. Hoping she would stay. Hoping she would leave and let alone. Wishing he didn't know the truth. anaya isobel morne

The healers came. Of course they came. They pushed Anaya to the side, telling her to go home and let them take care of their patient. She ignored them, standing in the corner as she watched desperately. She wanted to help. She wanted to trade her life for Shenya's, to do anything that would take away his pain. The sound of Perseus' screams and sobs tore through her and all she wanted to was help him. She watched as he fought the healers, as he pushed them away from him, tried to keep them from doing whatever they were doing. She knew they were just trying to help him, to keep him from injuring himself further, but tears streamed down her face as Anaya watched silently from the corner. Maybe if she was quiet, the healers wouldn't notice her and try to make her leave again. She watched as the healers forced him to drink something and then slowly filed out of the room once they determined he was safe. Once they were all gone, Anaya didn't know what to do. She wanted to rush to Perseus' side, to hug him or say something, but she didn't. She stood there, letting him grieve on his own, but not on his own. She felt like an intruder, told herself to leave several times, but she couldn't. Every so often she'd glance up at him, and once when she did he was looking at her. Their eyes met and she sensed something, but she didn't know what it was. She didn't know if he wanted her to leave or stay, or even if he really recognized that it was her standing there. Then his hand opened. She stumbled across the room, sitting in a chair next to his bed and taking his hand without saying a word. The tears were rolling down her face as she stared at his hand, unable to speak. All she could do was try to show him that she was here for him. PERSEUS CAREW

She took his hand. His fingers closed around her, his wrist tied to the bed. He didn't let his eyes close. He kept them on her. She was real. Anaya stared at their fingers, her tears dropping on his hand. For a moment he was angry, what right did she have to cry? Her dragon was still alive. But he chided himself. She had loved Shenya too. He stared at her for a long time. Long enough that he didn't really see her, he just stared. His eyes were unfocused, his mind numb. It was as if he couldn't think anymore, couldn't grieve. He just was. At some point he fell asleep. He only knew because he woke up. Unfortunately. As he woke his mind sought out his companion. Nothing. He closed his eyes, his chest struggled to hold back the sobs. Eventually he couldn't hold them back anymore and let himself cry. It wasn't angry, or disbelieving. It was overwhelming loss and sadness. His arms and legs were still bound, the doctors not trusting him to stay still. He wouldn't have trusted himself. He couldn't curl into himself, he couldn't even wipe his tears. He could just cry. It was three days before Elin Dragon-Rider came to visit him. Anaya had gone for the day. He was grateful she came, though he never said anything to her. He hadn't said anything since that first day. "Perseus." Elin said as she sat in Anaya's vacated chair. He stared away from her. The doctors had untied him the day before, now he just had red marks on his wrists and ankles from the bonds. It wasn't as if he could move much, especially not now that the doctors had put his legs in immovable bandages. "Perseus. The chief said again. He didn't look at her. "You have suffered a great loss. I have come to grieve with you." the sorrow in her voice was obvious. But he didn't want her grief. He wanted Shenya back. So he stared. He wasn't sure how long the chief sat with him. But he was relieved when she left. That meant Anaya could come back sit with him. He turned his head toward the empty chair. Anaya didn't require anything of him. She just let him be and held his hand. And for some reason, that was exactly what he needed. anaya isobel morneOOC: permission to use ELIN DRAGON-RIDER

He didn't say anything to her, but his fingers tightened around hers. Anaya desperately wanted to say something to him, but she didn't. Illyana reminded her that she should let him grieve. Let Perseus talk to her when he was ready. Pushing him would only make things worse, and it would likely make him want her to leave. So she kept her mouth shut. She could feel Perseus' eyes on her. Sometimes she met his eyes, but when she did she was met with a blank stare, which made her squirm and feel uncomfortable, so most of the time she just stared at his hand. He fell asleep and she still didn't leave. She couldn't bear to leave his side, to abandon him when he needed her the most. Or maybe he just needed someone, but she was willing to be that person. Sometimes he cried, sometimes he lay there almost in a comatose state. She wanted to help, to wipe away his tears or just give him a hug, but Anaya also couldn't bear the thought of making anything worse for him. So she just sat there with him, often crying silently with him, unable to sit there and watch him in pain. She lost count of the days, but one morning when he was asleep a messenger came to tell her that Elin Dragon-Rider planned to come visit him today and wished to visit him alone. The message was pointed and the doctors that accompanied the messenger glared at her. They wanted her gone. She knew that, but she still ached at the thought of leaving him. She wanted to wait until he woke up and tell him that she'd be back, but the messenger and the doctors pulled her from the room just minutes after he delivered his message. Perseus was still asleep. She went on a flight with Illyana, crying with her dragon as she expressed how helpless she felt. Illyana encouraged her, comforting her and telling her to just focus on Perseus and what he needed now. She didn't need to be thanked, she was being a good friend. Anaya flew with Illyana for hours, but she never strayed far from the infirmary tent. She wanted to know when Elin Dragon-Rider left. She wanted to join Perseus as soon as she could. She actually fell asleep riding Illyana, who woke her when the chief left. "Anaya. Do you want to sit with him now?" Illyana asked gently to wake her. They both knew the answer to that question. Illyana flew down, landing a short distance away from the infirmary tent and Anaya rushed toward it. She walked inside and the healers rolled their eyes at her. She didn't care. She walked past them, making her way to Perseus. She was breathing hard from her sprint and wanted to apologize for leaving him, but she also didn't want to bother him. She sat down beside him and took his hand gently in hers, squeezing it ever so slightly. An internal debate took place about whether or not she should speak. "I'm sorry. They made me leave while you were asleep," she muttered, ending her debate. She leaned forward to rest her head against their hands. She didn't want to bother him, but she also didn't want him to think she'd abandoned him. Then again, maybe Perseus didn't even notice who was with him and who wasn't. Maybe he hadn't realized she'd been here the past few days. Anaya was an idiot. PERSEUS CAREW

It was right after Elin left that Anaya came back in. She was nearly running and her breath was quick. She sat in her chair and immediately grabbed his hand, squeezing it gently. He normally would have smiled at her. Said something to let her know it was okay. But it wasn't. And a smile would be a lie. She rested her head on their hands. He was so thankful for her being there. He continued to look at her, forcing himself to focus on her. He squeezed her hand once, hoping she would raise her head and make eye contact with him. If she did, she would see the thanks in his eyes. The gratitude. --- Several Weeks Later --- Each day the doctor's made him get out of his bed and move around the room with help. He had to feed himself, get dressed, and sit outside. After those pointless tasks were done he was allowed to stay in his bed the rest of the day. This was normally when Anaya came to visit, when she wasn't on a mission. He preferred it when she was there. All he wanted to do was lay there. Or disappear. Sometimes people came to visit him. Not many were as tactful as Elin had been that day. In fact most seemed to want him to do something. One day a girl with blonde pigtails came in and threw herself across his chest, crying that it was such a horrible tragedy his dragon had died and if it had been up to her they would have hunted down whoever was responsible. Do you hear this Shenya? This girl thinks she knows what she is talking about. He shocked himself with the active thought, then felt tears prick his eyes when he didn't get a response. But he found that he didn't want to not talk to her. Even if she wasn't there. Maybe this was a way he could keep her close? The girl sat up, leaving a cold puddle of tears chest. "Oh it is just awful what you have been through Perseus. I just want you to know," She took his hand in hers, pressing her pink lips to it. "I am here for you, no matter what happens." Percy had been staring at the ceiling, no emotion registering on his face. So the girl leaned over his bed to make eye contact with him. It took an effort, but he forced his eyes to stay unfocused. The girl sat back down, and when he didn't so much as move, left soon after. If only there were all that easy to get rid of.anaya isobel morne
