Perseus was on a scouting mission at the edge of the forest. He and Jankin had been out here all day, not a peep. Not a single dragon on human on the horizon, just like it had been all day. The tree he was in had large branch that had somehow been flattened. No matter the circumstances of that flatness, it made an excellent perch for him. He lay on his back tossing a small ball of twigs he had made, then catching it. Over and over he did this until Jankin finally stretched his neck up and snapped the ball between his powerful jaws. Perseus sat up, his expression outraged. "Hey! I was throwing that!" he said aloud, forgoing the mental link they had together I know, but you have been throwing it for two hours now. That is long enough. He rolled his eyes. Perseus grumbled to himself as he settled back onto his limb, looking out over the plains ahead of them. Suddenly he sat up. Do you see that? He asked Jankin, pointing to a black smudge just above the closest hill.

Anaya couldn't believe how long this was taking. When they passed by here on their way to the Dragon Manor, she saw signs of the Excalibur camp everywhere. She didn't think it would be this far away. She felt like she'd been running for miles, but she was not about to stop. If she did, she might not be able to help her friend. They were following her tracks, coming towards the Excalibur camp even now, but she had to talk to Elin. She needed to get permission to enter camp, permission for her friends to come so they could get the medical assistance they needed.
Finally, she found high ground and ran to the top of a hill. She paused for a moment, shading her eyes so she could look off into the distance, searching for any signs of the camp. She gave a short gasp when she saw a dragon on the next hill, right where the forest started. It wasn't too far away, but now she wasn't sure what to do. Should she run over there, hoping that this dragon was a member of Excalibur and that a human was near, or sneak away and look for another entrance? The memory of her friend's wound came to her mind and she started running towards the next hill, forgetting the possible consequences. If the dragon wasn't a member of Excalibur, she would deal with it and continue on. Her friends were relying on her and she wouldn't let them down.
Being a fast runner, it only took a few minutes for Anaya to run down her hill, across the small plain and up the next hill. She reached the crest of the hill, breathing heavily. To her relief, the dragon was not alone. With it was ... Percy? Rather, Perseus Carew(she only calls him Percy in her mind) was perched on the limb of a nearby tree. Her eyes widened at the sight of the man she's adored since she first joined Excalibur. Granted, he was years older than her- six years to be exact- but she always wished he would have noticed her. She hadn't seen him since she had her accident with Illyana, but she was sure this was him. She would never mistake his face.
She immediately wished she would have been scared enough of the dragon that she'd searched out another entrance to the camp, but it was too late for that. Taking a deep breath- she was still out of breath from the exertion of running all the way from the manor- she prepared herself to have a conversation with him. Hopefully he wouldn't recognize her. Out of all people she knew in Excalibur, she didn't want him to realize that she was the human who let her dragon die and then left Excalibur in shame.
Standing tall, Anaya focused her attention on Perseus and began to speak. "Greetings. My name is Isobel," she gave her middle name, hoping it would not remind him of Anaya. Most people from Excalibur didn't know what her middle name was, after all. "and I need your help. A friend of mine was injured at the Dragon Manor that's not too far away from here and we don't have enough supplies to help her. Is there any way that I can talk to the leader of your camp? I need to talk to whoever is in charge as soon as possible. This is Excalibur, isn't it? " She hoped she didn't give too much away by knowing that this camp was Excalibur, but she needed their help. She stood tall and waited for Perseus' response. Hopefully he would help her, even if he thought that she wasn't a member of Excalibur.

Perseus jumped off of his branch, landing in front of this strangely familiar girl. She looked younger than him, but was actually very beautiful. He could have sworn he had seen her before, but the name Isobel was not one he was familiar with. Jankin lowered his head protectively, but made sure to keep his distance. Perseus stepped forward to close some of the distance between he and Isobel. "I may be able to help you." familiar or not, this girl appeared out of no where, he couldn't take her to Elin, not without verifying her claims. But he may be able to help. She did look distressed. Maybe she was telling the truth. He held out his hand. "My name is Perseus. I'll do what I can for your friends, My dragon, Jankin can give us a ride to where ever your friends are." He put on his most reassuring smile. Be ready for anything, Jankin.(Muse: Imagine Dragons)

Anaya held back a sigh. She should have expected this. If she hadn't gotten embarrassed and actually told Perseus her real name, maybe he would have believed her and taken her to Elin right away. Oh well, she couldn't change her story now. Then he'd think she was a liar and she didn't want that ... even though it was true.
She looked at the hand outstretched in front of her and gave a quick, nervous smile before she turned her attention to the dragon briefly before focusing back on Perseus. She wanted to accept his offer right away, but knew it wouldn't be realistic. Any normal rebel would not agree to ride a dragon if they could avoid it. As a general rule, they don't trust dragons, whether they have riders or not. So she had to feign hesitation and nervousness, but not too much. Winter was relying on her so she had to get Perseus to trust her as quickly as possible.
"You want me to ride your dragon? I-I don't know if I can do that. I really don't like heights and I-I've never ridden a dragon before ..." she paused, angry that she had to keep on lying to him. Then she thought of something else, "Besides, it will scare my friends to have a dragon land close to them. They might attack us if we come by air and my friend is terribly injured so we don't have time to travel there and back again by foot. If I don't at least get access to some medical supplies so that we can help her ourselves, she'll die. Please, please believe me. Have your leader question me, or question me yourself if you don't trust me, but Winter doesn't have much time." Anaya looks into Perseus' eyes desperately. Maybe he'll believe her now, but she's not going to get her hopes up too high. Whatever happens, she needs to act quickly, for Winter's sake.

He noticed she did not take his hand. He noticed her contemplation of Jankin. He knew there was something she was not telling him. And he could have sworn he knew her from somewhere.
Dropping his hand, Perseus rested it on the handle of his sword casually. He was going to help her friends. Jankin was the fastest way to do that, but he would need some supplies...
"Listen, if your friends are in as much trouble as you say, there is not time for questioning. Jankin is the fastest way to get to your friends. If he scared them or not is not the issue, especially if there is a life on the line." He said urgently. He took a slow step forward. "I swear to you on my life, my dragon will not harm you, or your friends." He quieted Jankin's protests in his mind. "Please, just trust me." He held out his hand one more time.
(OOC: AH! What if when your dragon died is the same time as when my dragon died?! From the same thing. It is like two opposing sides of the same story and they both end up in the same place. If you don't want that, it is okay, because it is still super cool)

As he extended his hand yet again, Anaya looked into Perseus’ eyes, trying to hide the longing in her own. Only one year ago, she would have done almost anything to get this sort of attention from him. How she wished he could remember her, even with her lying about her name. Once again she glanced at Jankin quickly, noticing in an instant that he seemed stiff and rigid. Did he not like what was going on? She had a sudden urge to try and slip into his mind, but controlled it. The last thing she needed was to make Jankin suspicious about who she was and how she learned telepathy. That information would give her away for sure, and she had no idea how Perseus would respond to it, which made her nervous.
Returning her focus to Perseus, she took a deep breath and held it –a silent sign of her hidden anxiety- as she reached out to take his hand. “You’re right. I don’t have time to delay if I want to save Winter.” She grasped his hand firmly. It took her only a moment to realize that to her his hand felt strong, warm, and reassuring. Her heartbeat started to increase and she glanced up into his eyes, wondering if he could feel it or not. Hopefully not, because that could be quite embarrassing. Either way, she still had to appear strong. For Winter.
Intentionally hardening her gaze, she looked at him closely as she forced herself to remember what was at stake. “I’ll trust you. But I warn you, my trust is not something you want to break, so be careful what you do with it.” She paused for a long moment before continuing. “Now, what do we need to do so we can leave?”
(OOC: OH MY GOSH! I think that would be awesome! Umm … how long ago did his dragon die though? I don’t want Anaya to be suffering because of her guilt for tooooo long before she finds the comfort she needs … aka Perseus …. Hahaha. OR maybe Perseus’ dragon died trying to save hers or vice versa?? Maybe he looked for her after the battle and only found her sister too? I dunno, just an idea)

He saw her hesitation, the conflict that struggled behind her eyes. She was battling sometime fierce. Something she didn't want to face alone, but felt she was forced to. He knew what that felt like. Perseus had gone through pain, hatred, disgust. Emotions he didn't want had slammed into him, forcing him to acknowledge their existence and to deal with them. He found that the longer he held them at bay, the stronger they became. This girl, Isobel, She was keeping them at arms length. But why?
As he was studying her, she surprised him. She took his hand in hers. After his first invitation was declined, he had no reason to believe she would take the second. But she did. Her calloused hand gave a firm handshake, strong and determined. Isobel, whatever she was fighting, was a force to be reckoned with. She reminded him of someone he had known a long time ago. Someone who looked quite a bit like... Isobel. His mind connected the dots, there were large gaps, holes in his knowledge. But he was becoming more certain. He knew her.
He kept a hold of her hand, letting the moment pass, then pulled her toward Jankin. "Don't do anything unkind, stupid, or something I would do." when they arrived next to him, he turned to her, dropping her hand. "To mount, you need to ask his permission, then you can set your foot here," he pointed to the crease behind Jankin's shoulders. "Then... Well, do you know how to mount a dragon?" he questioned. Even as he had been talking, he realized if she was who he thought she was, she wouldn't already know how to mount a dragon, and would not need this instruction. She might even find it offensive.
(OOC: Ok! Had a great idea! So, Perseus is the one to bury her dragon. At the time this all happened Perseus and Jankin were off getting to know each other so they could bond. They almost decided to not bond, until they happened upon the scene at the lake. They arrived after Anaya left, and so did not see her dragon die. But when they both rush up to help, that was how they decided they could bond together. )

Anaya wasn't sure about what she was supposed to do now. Perseus was still holding her hand, leading her to his dragon ... who still didn't look happy to see her. Anaya didn't know what to think of Jankin. Did he recognize her? Or did he just think she was a danger to Perseus? Either way, it didn't seem like Perseus cared about what his dragon thought of her. He was determined that they should ride his dragon to find her friends and she was slightly nervous about the situation. How would the small rebel group react when they saw such a large, black dragon bearing down on them. It was almost a certainty that they would attack.
Then she realized something that should have been obvious to her from the beginning. She could speak to her friends telepathically and warn them that she was coming with a dragon and its rider, that this was necessary in order to save Winter and that they must NOT attack the dragon, no matter what. Immediately after this realization some of the stress left her. She didn't have to worry about her friends attacking them. Now what she really needed to focus on was how to convince Perseus that she wasn't comfortable on a dragon.
However, now that she was so close to Jankin, she wanted nothing more than to climb up on his back. She wasn't even intimidated in the least. She believed Perseus and knew that no harm would come to her or her friends but even more than that, she just wanted to fly again! Besides losing the immense companionship and friendship that she had in Illyana, she missed flying almost more than she could describe. She wanted to be in the air and feel the wind in her face! Still, she had to be careful. It seemed like Perseus believed her, that he didn't suspect her of being Anaya and she didn't want to do anything to give herself away. So she would contain her excitement, she had to.
Once they reached Jankin, he dropped her hand and she turned her attention to Perseus expectantly, waiting for him to explain what she should do, even though she already knew. "To mount, you need to ask his permission, then you can set your foot here," Perseus explained patiently. Anaya leaned closer to him so she could see where he was pointing, even though she already knew. She had to keep up the pretense. She didn't want him to know who she was. Then he asked if she knew how to mount a dragon and Anaya stared at him in stunned shock. Did he recognize her?
She frowned and let her eyebrows furrow as she looked at him with what she hoped was a confused expression. "I'm a rebel, not a member of Excalibur. We don't ride dragons," she answered bluntly, not sure what else he wanted her to say. Then, unable to help herself, she continued, But if riding a dragon is anything like riding a horse, no offense," she threw in for Jankin, turning to face him, raising her hands in a gesture of innocence, and backing away nervously. The last thing she wanted to do was offend him before putting her life in his hands. "Then I would guess that after putting your foot there, you would swing the other one up over him?" She made her answer a question. She thought this response was logical enough that it wouldn't give her away, but who knew? Perseus was pretty darn smart. Her only hope was that he didn't figure out the truth until after they helped Winter and Anaya could leave.

The stunned expression on her face when he asked if she already knew how to mount was enough to confirm his suspicion. He did know her, and he had known her for a long time. He had a memory of when he had first introduced her and her sister into Excalibur.
"And this, this is our humble home." he had said, gesturing to the small town, hidden under the trees. Dragons and people moved around, helping each other with different tasks. "It doesn't look like much" he told them, "But really, it is a paradise." Shenia landed beside them, raising to her full height while standing on all fours, but it was only an inch or two taller than Perseus himself. He placed his hand on her neck, scratching at the spot she loved. He tried not to embarrass her too much, she hated when he acted stupid when people knew he was associated with her. So he just gave her a big sloppy kiss on her cheek before turning back to his guests. "This is my dragon, Shenia. We both live here in the town and go on missions for Excalibur." The two girls looked overwhelmed but excited at this new prospect of humans and dragons. The younger girl's eyes were wide, and Percy's first thought was, she is going to love it here.
Anaya. Why had she called herself Isobel? Did she not want him to know who she was? Why? Personally, whenever he saw someone he hadn't seen in a long time, he ran up and hugged them. He felt Jankin's mind turn distrustful toward her. "Come on, Jankin, it is not that bad. So she didn't want us to know who she is. What do I care? Let's just go help her friends, you can be mad at me later." If she didn't want him to know who she was, then he wasn't going to be a spoil sport and reveal that he did know who she was. That was just rude.
So he pretended to not see the studded expression, He just went along with whatever game she was playing.
"Well, if he was a smaller dragon, you could just swing your leg over, but if you try it there, you are just going to hurt yourself. You will have to bring your other foot into the stirrup of the saddle, then pull yourself up onto it. Actually, I could just pull you up, excuse me." He brushed in front of her and placed his foot on Jankins' shoulder. Honestly, that was only possible when Jankin was crouching. Sometimes, he just ran up his tail. He grabbed the stirrup and pulled himself up into the saddle with practiced grace. He looked down to Anaya, or rather Isobel. What game was she playing? He secured his far leg with the leather straps he had installed (made especially for areal tricks) then leaned over and, once again, extended his hand. "Just set your foot then, then grab my hand." He encouraged, smiling encouraging at her, a slight twinkle to his eyes.

Anaya turned her attention to Jankin and asked "May I have your permission please?" She waited for a response from the dragon for a few seconds and then turned her attention to Perseus, who sat up in the saddle, a sly smile on his face. What did he have to be sly about? Once again she couldn’t help but wonder if he recognized her, but she instantly dismissed the thought. If he recognized her, he would have said something, but he didn’t, so he couldn't. She watched him a moment longer, unable to resist trying to figure him out. Why was he smiling? He didn’t trust her, wouldn’t help her without verifying that what she said was truth, but he was smiling as he invited her to join him on his dragon. A part of her was annoyed at how confusing he was, but the other part liked it. He was still the same Perseus, the same riddle he had always been to her. Finally realizing that she was standing there, staring up at him as he sat astride his mighty black dragon, she began to move. Slowly, hesitantly, she reached forward and took his hand, letting him help her up onto his dragon. Was she sure about this? Would riding a dragon help give her inner peace or would it remind her of what she lost? Anaya wasn’t sure, so she tried to think of other things.
Settling herself behind him, Anaya wrapped her arms lightly around his waist. He hadn’t instructed her to do this, but it felt like the natural thing to do, especially since she was posing as someone that had never ridden a dragon before. Even so, she knew that she was just giving excuses to herself. She wanted to be close to him, for once. She’d always dreamed about riding a dragon with him, or riding Illyana beside Jankin … not that that could really happen anymore. Still, this would be a fulfillment of one of her dreams, at least. However, as she thought about it, she realized that it would probably be her last time ever riding a dragon. Her heart sank at the thought, though she didn’t want it to. She wanted to be done with riding dragons, done with Excalibur. She’d learned through experience that though it was fun and felt fabulous to be a part of something bigger than yourself, all it brought was pain. Still there was that little piece of her heart, deep down that knew she missed being a Dragon Rider. She missed Excalibur.
Yet, how could she go back? Even if she was able to stand the sight of dragons and humans interacting constantly- the reminder of what she lost- she was a deserter! She left, without a sign or a hint of where she was going. She avoided Excalibur for a year, on purpose. Would her friends even want her there anymore? She admitted to herself that they probably would, but she still wasn't sure.
As she sat behind Perseus, waiting for them to take off, she wondered briefly what it would be like to join Excalibur again. Would everyone really forgive her for leaving them without a backwards glance? She felt in her heart that they would. Still, uncertainty about her own heart kept her from really considering the idea. She didn’t think she could emotionally stand living somewhere where she had once been with Illyana. She wasn’t even willing to try, she decided. She just had to save Winter, wait for her to be healed, and then she would walk out again. She would also try to keep to herself while there. If no one knew she was there, no one could miss her, right?
She nodded as she finished her plan. She would do what she had to, then she would leave. While there, she would try to avoid those who once knew her so well.
Finally pulling herself back to her own surroundings, she couldn’t help but wonder why they hadn’t taken off yet. “Not to be rude, but when are we going to leave? My friend is dying out there,” she asked quietly. She really wasn’t trying to be rude, but she didn’t know what else to say that would urge them to leave. She hoped that neither Perseus nor Jankin would take offense.

Perseus had a mental argument with Jankin about whether to let Anaya on. Perseus won the argument, but Jankin was not happy about it. He sighed Jankin and he didn't always get along, didn't always agree, but when it came down to, they both would do whatever it took to help people when they needed it. And right now, someone needed them.
She gripped his hand, and once again he was struck by how strong she was. Anaya had been though something no one should ever have to. She had lost someone to whom she had given her entire self to. The pain of losing someone that close to you, it was unbearable. He knew too well the torture it was to go on with your life. It was torture until he accepted it, until he forgave himself. Once that forgiveness and acceptance was in place, healing began and painful thoughts became happy memories.
She swung up behind him and wrapped her arms around his waist. His arms lifted a little higher with the unexpected gesture. His brain fuzzed and all he could think was She is holding onto me. He felt Jankin's eyes rolling and some slight disgust in his thoughts.
Hey, don't think that at me. Seriously. He steeled himself and put his arms down, grabbing the saddle. He was going to focus on helping her friend, not about her arms around him, not about how he wanted to help her heal. No, just about helping her friend.
"My friend is dying out there." Were the words that really snapped him out.
"Right, hold on tight." Did he really need to say that? " Let's go Jankin."
With one giant sweep of his wings, Jankin lifted off of the ground. He continued pumping his wings to gain altitude. They flew higher and higher, the wind growing cold on his skin. But it was exhilarating. It brought true clarity to his mind, clearing out the confusion and leaving one thought at the forefront. He had to help Anaya.

As they took off Anaya held her breath, anticipating the dropping feeling in her stomach, the feeling that meant she was no longer on ground but was now in the air. As the wind rushed past her face and through her hair, she grinned. She wanted to laugh and show her excitement, but she was still trying to act like a normal rebel would. Most of them would be terrified by this turn of events, by flying in the air on a dragon, but she was elated. She'd forgotten how much she loved flying. Slightly loosening the grip her right hand had on Perseus, she leaned over a little to the left, looking at the landscape in front of them. She'd missed the view too! She thought she would never be able to see something like this again, but here she was, enjoying it more than she could have imagined. Unable to completely control her joy, she pulled herself back behind Perseus and rested her head lightly on his shoulder. She could hardly believe that it was Perseus who helped her relive the best years of her life, just by taking her for a ride on his dragon. She would be forever in his debt for this, though there was no way she was going to let him know that.
Suddenly, she remembered what she should be doing. She had to warn her friends that she was coming back on a dragon or else they would attack in earnest and she knew, more than most, that her team was capable of inflicting serious damage. However, she was not going to let them kill Perseus' dragon. She wouldn't let it happen. This time it was much harder for her to reach out to them. They were a long ways away and she wasn't used to speaking telepathically from such a distance. Closing her eyes, she focused her mind to search for James'. Normally she would search for Winter, but she hoped Winter was still unconscious. As she focused on reaching out to find James' mind, she didn't even realize that her grip on Perseus' waist tightened and she grew stiff behind him. She was entirely focused on searching for her friends.
Finally, she found James' mind. "James, I am coming back to you with someone that can help us, but he wanted to verify my claims before he promised us aid. We're coming on his dragon to find you all. Now, I need you all to act as you normally would and attack, but do NOT kill this dragon. First, I am on it, secondly if we kill it they most certainly will not help us. But they don't know I can speak to you telepathically so the rider is expecting some kind of altercation. Do you understand?" She asked urgently, fighting to keep the communication open. It was hard to hold up a telepathic conversation from such a distance and Anaya was not used to it. She struggled against the urge to close it, waiting for James' response. She could feel a headache building up from the stress of maintaining the conversation.
"I understand Anaya. We'll attack, but we won't kill the dragon. I'll see you soon," James responded fairly quickly. Anaya forced out one more sentence before she could no longer hold the communication open. "James, tell everyone to call me Isobel once we arrive."
As she came back to her present location, she felt herself losing control. She'd done it; she pushed too hard and now she was going to suffer the consequences. She felt her consciousness slipping away. She tried to tighten her grip on Perseus, but instead she slumped against his back as her eyes started rolling into the back of her head. "Perseus," she whispered desperately before she actually fell unconscious. She was only out for what seemed like a few moments, but when she came to she felt extremely dizzy, disoriented, and slightly terrified. Where was she? What was she doing? Who was with her? However, the most important question was: how had she lost control like that?

The wind swept his hair back as Jankin mentally reached out for him urgently. Perseus responded letting his mind meld with Jankin’s. Instantly they were no longer two separate entities, but one, two bodies and one mind. They felt their muscles contract and loosen with each stroke of their wings. They felt the sporadic wind currents, but somehow still knew how to use them to get where they wanted. They felt Anaya’s arms tightly wrapped around their waist while still feeling the buoyancy of their huge girth as it soared through the air. This was how they loved to fly. ”Perseus.” The small whisper ripped Percy from Jankin’s mind. Anaya’s arms loosed in their grip around his waist, then her limp body slid from the saddle and was flung toward the ground.
”Anaya!” He felt a lurch of fear take hold of his throat. But even as this happened, Jankin’s presence in his mind was reassuring. Jankin and he brought their minds together once again, merging in the one thing they always agreed on. Helping someone else.
Their wings folded against their body, the muscles tight to hold them in place, as their nose pointed to the ground, aiming right for Anaya. The wind streaked past them, they were gaining. But not fast enough, she would hit the ground before they even got to her. They gave one powerful stroke of their wings sending them shooting downward. As they neared her, they lessened their connection. Perseus reached out and grabbed her arm, hand over hand he reeled her in toward him. Once he had a hold of her torso he pulled her into his chest and held tightly to her with both arms in preparation for their break from the fall.
Jankin’s exploded out from his sides, stopping their descent violently. As he gained back their altitude Perseus looked down at Anaya, readjusting his arms so he was cradling her.
Her eyes snapped open, terrified and wild.
”Anaya, it is okay, you are safe. I have you.” he said soothingly. The words he spoke resonated within him. He did have her.

Anaya was waking up slowly. Her mind tried frantically to answer the questions racing through her. In the back of her mind she realized that someone was holding her, but it didn’t register outright. She felt herself being shifted in someone’s arms, but she wasn’t paying attention. She was trying to figure out what was going on. Where was she? Why did she feel like she’d just been thrown off a horse? Why did she feel so dizzy, even with her eyes shut? She simply couldn’t make sense of what was going on.
Out of nowhere she noticed that her hands seemed pinned to her sides- at least, there was some kind of pressure on her arms- and there was also a sweeping feeling rising and falling in her gut. She once heard from someone that this kind of feeling was often experienced when on a boat. But why would she be on a boat? Then she finally realized where she was. A dragon. It had to be a dragon, but why? Why would she be on a dragon? Was she captured by one?
Feeling slightly terrified and crazed, she opened her eyes to try and figure out where the dragon had her and whether or not she could escape. To her surprise, the first thing she saw was not a quickly-moving landscape underneath her. It was a face as familiar as her own. Perseus. “Anaya, it is okay, you are safe. I have you,” he told her gently and she couldn’t help but smile at his words even as her mind continued to reel. Hardly conscious of what she was doing, she reached up a hand and touched his bristly cheek briefly before letting her hand fall back down. Her body was so exhausted and even though she hated feeling weak- especially in front of him- there was nothing she could do.
All of a sudden, everything came flowing back to her. She remembered Winter, coming to Perseus and asking for help, giving him her middle name instead of her own, and the glorious feelings that came from holding his hand and putting her arms around his waist. Then she remembered her conversation with James and realized what happened. She must have fallen. Perseus must have rescued her. She owed him, once again.
His words echoed in her mind and she felt better. She realized that he was cradling her in his arms and adored the feeling. He was so strong and she felt so … so safe and protected there. She knew he just saved her life and that he wouldn’t let anything happen to her. After all, “he had her.” She liked the way that sounded so final, even though he probably didn’t mean it that way. It was just so comfo- WAIT.
Wait a second. She thought back to his words. He called her “Anaya,” didn’t he? Crap. So he recognized her? When did that happen? And how? She closed her eyes- maybe she was just imagining that she was with him. Maybe this was just a very vivid dream. She opened them again. Nope. He was still there.
“You called me Anaya,” she mumbled. “How did you know?” she asked, giving up the charade. Apparently she couldn’t keep the truth from him. Why even try? At least it would give her more to talk to him about, especially since it didn't seem like he was mad at her for lying to him. Maybe he’d stay and talk with her for a while, even. Her hopes rose at the thought. She would love that.

She seemed to relax into his arms as he soothed her. He was surprised at how comfortable his arms felt around her.
But she suddenly she stiffened. She looked into his eyes, her own wide with emotion.
"How did you know? she asked him softly.
How did he know? How could he not know? After he had accepted that she was familiar, it was obvious.
"Anaya, do you know how long I have looked for you?" that was not what he had meant to say, but it was what had come out. He and her sister had looked for months, he had not stopped, but he hadn't been giving it all of his attention. Just all of his spare time. He knew that she had to be traumatized by the loss of her dragon. He knew what that felt like. He could help. But only if he could find her. And now he had found her. And she was pretending that he was an idiot. That hurt.
