Anaya stood on the shore of Lake Mortez, breathing deeply with closed eyes. She'd only been at Excalibur for a day, but she felt so claustrophobic. For the last year, she'd been alone or with small groups of people. She wasn't used to being surrounded by others like she is now. That's why she came to the Lake. She needed some alone time, some time to think. In reality, she knew she really wanted someone to confide in, but she wasn't expecting to actually find someone.
She could talk to Perseus, probably. Except that he was the one she wanted to talk about with someone else. She was just so confused when it came to him! She didn't know what she was supposed to think when it came to the man that she'd liked since she first joined Excalibur years ago. So she wanted to talk to someone else, someone who she could trust to not tell him what was going on.
She could feel the headache coming on once more. It was a sign that she was thinking way too much, way too often, but what else could she do? She couldn't stop herself from thinking. She looked at the cold water in front of her and then started running around the Lake, to a small cliff a short ways away. She may not be able to stop her thoughts most of the time, but she could sure do it right now. Once she reached the spot, she didn't hesitate, she jumped into the water.
The cold made Anaya freeze from shock but at the same time she relished the sensation. For the first time in what seemed like months, her thoughts were on her condition: the cold instead of everything else. It's the first time since yesterday that she was able to get her thoughts off of Him. She held her breath as she swam to the surface and then she started swimming to the shore. The exercise was perfect! She was entirely focused on her body and what she was doing, not on anything else around her. It was so cold she could barely breathe.
Once she reached the shore, she shivered and walked back to the cliff. This time she sat on the edge and looked out into the Lake as she shivered. The cold was a wonderful distraction from her thoughts.

Jake took a deep breath as he left the Excalibur Camp. Everyone was busy training and preparing for the impending battle that Ryker had seen a vague vision of, but he needed a short break. After all, today was a hard day for him. It was seven years ago today that his mother was murdered right in front of his eyes. Of all days, today was one where he found it difficult to be with others. He struggled to make jokes and lighten the mood when his thoughts were so focused on the mother that he loved and lost. So he decided that it was time to make a visit to Lake Mortez. It was unlikely that anyone would miss him and if they did, they could talk to Balerion, who would let Jake know that he needed to come back. Until then, Jake was going to spend some alone time at the Lake. He was sure no one else would be there either; they were all too busy sparring with one another and prepping for the fight. As he approached the Lake, he was startled to see someone running around it. Who is that, he thought to himself. What are they doing? He watched as the young woman jumped into the Lake. Startled, he ran forward until he could see the Lake. Who would do that? Do they have a death wish? he wondered. He exhaled in relief when he saw her swimming across the Lake, headed to the shore. Once she reached it, she started walking back to the cliff. Jake hid behind some trees, wondering what she was going to do now. Would she jump back in? He relaxed a little more when he saw the young woman sit down on the edge of the cliff. At least she wasn't going to jump back in. She hugged herself as she sat on the edge of the cliff, clearly freezing and Jake couldn't stop himself any longer. He had to see what was going on. He stepped out from behind the tree and started to walk towards her. "Hey are you all right? I saw you jump into the Lake," he added, just so she would know why he was asking for her welfare. Too late he realized that she might not want anyone to be with her. Oh well. He was already here so he might as well see if there was anything he could do to help her. anaya isobel morne

Anaya's heart pounded when she heard someone speaking from somewhere behind her. Who was following her? She was hoping that no one would find her here, but apparently that wasn't going to happen. She'd already been found, after all. She took a deep breath to make sure she look composed before she turned around to see who was approaching her. She didn't bother to stand up. She stared for a moment when she recognized the young man. Jacob Kennington? What was he doing out here? And why was he being so serious? Did he not recognize her or something? She couldn't remember him ever saying something in a serious manner before. When she lived in the Excalibur camp, Jake was the one she always went to for entertainment, for comical relief when things in her life were stressful. It was slightly ironic that he found her now, at another time when she was stressed, only this time she hadn't searched him out. She gave a small smile and shrugged, wondering if he would recognize her now that he could see her face. "I'm fine. I just got ... a little hot, so I decided to go for a swim," she lied. A burst of wind came and Anaya fought to keep her body from shivering. She didn't want him to see any weakness in her. She turned away from him and looked back out towards the Lake. She was positive that he would join her on the edge of the cliff. "So what are you doing here, Jacob Kennington?" she asked, hoping this would make him show if he recognized her or not. Jake stared when the young woman in front of him turned around. It was Anaya! He couldn't believe it. He'd heard that some rebels were in the camp for a few days because one of them had gotten injured and there were also some rumors that Anaya was among them, but he hadn't believed them. He'd thought they were just rumors. He moved so he was right next to her and sat down, dangling his feet over the edge of the cliff so he was sitting alongside her, staring out across the Lake. Anaya seemed a little surprised to see him too. Probably because he'd actually been serious when he asked if she was all right. If she remembered him at all, it was probably as a tease, a man who was always joking around and always in trouble. Naturally, he would have to run into her on the one day of the year when he found it hard to be his normal, cheerful self. She gave her excuse and Jake saw straight through it ... well part of it, at least. Obviously she did jump in the Lake and swim back to the edge, but he didn't think it was because she was hot. Something was clearly going on and Jake couldn't help but wonder if it had something to do with her coming back to Excalibur. She stayed away for an entire year and he had a feeling that she wasn't exactly happy to be back at the moment. Maybe she wanted to talk about it. "A little hot?" he asked, a small smile on his face as he turned just in time to watch her shiver. Jake was pretty sure that Anaya was trying to hide the fact that she was shivering, but she'd failed. He closed his eyes and focused inward. He wanted to help Anaya, but finding potential kinetic energy was harder than manipulating it. His hands started shaking slightly as he focused. He heard her gasp and gave a small smile as he continued to focus. He was shifting the air around her so quickly that it dried her wet clothes and hair. Hopefully that would help her at least a little bit. After he was sure she was dry, he relaxed and opened his eyes again. "Hope that doesn't make you hot again," he teased. He didn't tease her long, however. He had to answer her question, after all. "Oh, I just needed some time alone, some space. Sometimes camp can be confining so I thought I would go for a walk. Imagine how shocked I was when I saw a young woman just jump into Lake Mortez. I was worried that you were going to die," he confessed, his voice soft. Most people didn't get to see this side of Jake, it was a side that he tried to keep to himself, but he couldn't hide it today. Not with all the memories that were floating around his mind. He tuned so he was facing her. "Anaya is it really you? Where have you been for the past year? Why did you really jump into the Lake?" he asked before he could stop himself. He had no idea if she would answer any of his questions, but still he had to ask. anaya isobel morne

Anaya didn't even turn to look at him when Jake sat down next to her , but he didn't look at the lake like she expected. Instead, he was looking at her. "A little hot?" he teased, finally reminding her of the Jake that she knew. He didn't believe her excuse, not that she was surprised. She and Jake had never been really close friends, but everyone who knew Anaya at all knew that she wasn't very good at hiding things. If it was really important and if it was with a stranger, she could lie decently, but when it came to people that actually knew her they could see through it almost instantly. She actually gasped when she felt the air around her start moving. Without thinking about it, her eyes closed and her muscles relaxed as the air around her moved. She knew Jake was manipulating it to dry her off, but she wasn't annoyed for some reason. Instead she felt strangely relaxed as the air whipped around her, drying her clothes and flitting through her hair until it was dry as well. She couldn't remember the last time she'd felt so relaxed. She started smiling, though she wasn't aware of that either. She was so used to being serious and hiding her true feelings that it was nice to let them out for once. Then Perseus' face flickered briefly through her mind and a bit of the tension came back. Percy, she whispered in her mind, speaking to the part of her that had been closed off for more than a year. If Illyana was still alive, she would have heard that whisper of longing, but she wasn't. For once, the brief thought of Illyana didn't distract Anaya from her original thoughts, her thoughts of Percy. She'd cared for him as long as she could remember, but never felt like she actually had a chance with him. At least, she didn't ever think so before. Now she didn't know what to think. After accidentally meeting him a yesterday and begging for him to help Winter and then riding his dragon with him and releasing some of her feelings in front of him, she was entirely confused. She couldn't understand what happened between the two of them. She wanted it to be something, her heart longed for that, but at the same time, she wasn't sure if that was even a possibility. Suddenly the air stopped moving and Anaya realized that she was entirely dry. She actually laughed when Jake teased her again. She couldn't believe what was going on, but she felt lighter than she had in ages. More hopeful and peaceful and she just wanted to keep the feeling with her as long as she could. "Thanks Jake," she breathed before she opened her eyes again. Jake started to explain why he was so far away from camp and the thought came to Anaya that she wasn't the only one hurting today. Something was going on with Jake, but he probably wouldn't talk with her about it until she confided in him. For the first time in a long time, Anaya actually wanted to talk to someone a lot. She'd spent some time confiding in Winter, but Winter didn't know her as well as people from Excalibur did. It was easy to confide in someone that didn't know your shame. This feeling was an interesting revelation for Anaya. She was ready to talk to people who really knew her. Finally. His tone was serious, all teasing put aside and Anaya was stunned. She couldn't remember ever seeing Jake so serious before. He was the prankster, the joker and had always been that. Then he asked the questions. "Anaya, is it really you? Where have you been for the past year? Why did you really jump into the Lake?" He seemed to regret the questions right after he asked them, but Anaya didn't. She was finally ready to talk with someone. She gave a small smile and took a deep breath, "Those aren't easy questions, Jake. Except for the first one. Yeah, it's me." She forced a laugh, trying to sound normal. She was going to confide in him, but that didn't mean she was confident in herself yet. "I've been with a group of nomads for the last year. I know you probably can't understand this, but I ... I don't deserve to be here. I let Illyana die. I should've-" her voice broke and the tears came flooding out, to her complete and utter shame. The sobs racked her body and she realized there was nothing she could do to stop them. She pulled her legs up so her feet were resting on the edge of the cliff and she wrapped her arms around her legs as she sobbed. She released all the anguish of loosing Illyana, her friends, family and even herself over the last year. She'd finally reached her breaking point and she couldn't stop it. Jake breathed out softly, relieved. He'd been worried that Anaya would be mad at him for drying her off, but apparently she wasn't. She just seemed grateful and he was glad. He had no interest in upsetting her, especially since he hoped he'd be able to help her this afternoon. She seemed upset and he knew what it felt like to hold your feelings in for too long. He was doing it right now, even. In all the years he'd lived at Excalibur, he'd never found someone to confide in, someone he felt comfortable telling about what happened to his mother and why he hated the Knights of Purity so much. Then she started talking, answering his questions and Jake turned his full attention to her. Even though he was having a terrible day, he was going to do anything he could to help her feel better. She told him that she'd been living with some nomads before she seemed to lose control. Jake couldn't help but stare when she told him that she didn't deserve to be with Excalibur. Not after Illyana's death. "Ah," Jake thought, finally understanding. "She blames herself for her dragon's death. That explains a lot."Then she started crying, but not the normal, simple type of crying that most people do when they're upset. No, no. Instead, she was sobbing. She was rocking backward and forward slightly, hugging her knees as the cries seemed to rip themselves from her and Jake felt like he was paralyzed. What was he supposed to do? How could he help someone going through such obvious pain? How was he supposed to comfort her? He thought about the times when he felt like doing exactly what she was now and decided to be the friend he wished he had in those moments. He reached over and wrapped an arm around her shoulder, pulling her so she could lean on him. He gently patted her shoulder as he waited for her crying to subside. "Anaya, that wasn't your fault," he started, even though he was sure she'd heard that before, or at least thought it. "I've talked with Lacey about the situation. There was nothing you could have done. And we wouldn't want you anywhere else. We've missed you here. Believe it or not, Excalibur hasn't been the same without you. I know you feel guilty about what happened, but blaming yourself isn't going to help anyone, especially not yourself." He continued to pat her back, hoping that what he was saying made a positive influence. He didn't know what else to do. anaya isobel morne

Anaya couldn't believe that she was letting her feelings control her like this. This type of stuff never happened to her! She was always in control and composed, especially when she was around others. Yet, she couldn't seem to get a handle on herself now. It was like the feelings of inadequacy and loneliness from the last year were all drowning her and she didn't know how she was supposed to react. Should she fight it, embrace it, or just jump in the Lake again? Honestly, she liked that last option best. If she did jump in the Lake, maybe it would be cold enough to knock some sense into her. Then Jake put his arm around her, pulling her so she leaned against his side. Her first instinct- the natural one- was to pull away like she always did. She rarely allowed anyone to get close to her, especially after she left Excalibur last year, but she couldn't pull away this time. Maybe her emotions were just controlling her too much, but she couldn't do what she always did. Instead, she found herself willingly turning her head and crying on his shoulder as she held on tightly to his arm. She didn't have feelings for Jake and she was positive that he didn't have them for her either- other than friendship- but she couldn't help her response right now. She needed someone to help comfort her and here he was, able and seemingly willing. She was going to take him up on that. Apparently she didn't have a choice. Her emotions wouldn't let her change her mind. For a long time he just patted her back and let her cry but eventually he started talking. At first Anaya was annoyed, positive that nothing he could say would help her feel better, but surprisingly it did. His reassurance that the members of Excalibur didn't blame her for Illyana's death gave her just enough strength to reign in her emotions once more. She wasn't healed- not even close- but she was temporarily satisfied enough that she could talk, which is what she really wanted to do. She sniffled as she sat back up, relieved that she'd gained control of herself once more. She hated feeling weak, especially when she was in close proximity to others. Not that the weak feeling was gone now, it was just lessened since she wasn't crying anymore. She looked over to the lake again and hugged her knees, extremely aware of how childish she must seem to him. Hopefully he wouldn't judge her too harshly for it. "Thank you Jake. Sorry, I don't know what that was. I just ... I don't feel comfortable here anymore. I don't know everyone and I just ... I don't belong. I missed you all over the last year too but I just couldn't bring myself to come back. Not after what happened. And now ... Winter got hurt. There was no choice. It was either bring her here or let her die and I couldn't do that. So I brought her and everything- it's just painful and complicated. I like this guy. I mean, I've cared for him for a long time, but I ran into him yesterday and I just feel so embarrassed about the last year and my feelings for him and everything else seems to add to it. My emotions are so close to the surface, I can hardly control them and I really want to run away and escape, but I can't." she lowered her voice to an almost inaudible emotional whisper. "I can't." Without meaning to, Anaya lost track of her thoughts as she looked at the great expanse of water in front of her. It was all just too much. Too much with Perseus and memories of Illyana, with Winter's injury and Anaya's feelings of emptiness. She wasn't sure how long she was going to be able to handle this. Jacob Kennington

When she pulled away from him, Jake turned enough that one of his legs still dangled over the cliff ledge while he crossed the other one in front of him. He wanted Anaya to know without a doubt that she had his full attention. He listened carefully as she tried to express her emotions. He could tell that this was hard for her, that she didn't know how to express what she was feeling, but he listened patiently. He wasn't going to say anything until she was done because he wanted to give her the chance to get it all out, as much as possible. As she talked about her pain, Jake felt his heart ache a little bit too. He didn't know what it would be like to lose your dragon and he didn't want to have to experience it. "Don't apologize for the way you feel Anaya. Showing emotions isn't a sign of weakness; it's a part of being human. Maybe it would help if you could let your feelings out a little more?" he sighed. The next part wasn't as easy to give advice for. "And maybe you should be done escaping ... I'm not trying to tell you what to do, but it seems like you've been running for a year and it doesn't look like it helped much. Believe me, I understand the need to run away. I've done it," he added bitterly. "But that doesn't always help. Sometimes you need to face your problems."
Jake stopped. He was done talking about what he thought Anaya should do now. He waited, resigned to whatever reaction she'd give him. He half-expected her to get angry or leave, but he hoped she'd stay and talk with him. After a few seconds he mumbled one last thing. "And no matter what happens, I'll be here if you need to talk," he smiled his characteristic mischievous smile, "Or if you want me to keep specific people away from you, I'm more than willing to help you any way I can."anaya isobel morne

At Jake's words, Anaya felt defensive. She knew it was pointless, that he was only trying to help her but she couldn't help it. Her emotions were all over the place and a part of her wondered if he was telling the truth. The Jake she knew never ran away from anything. He faced everything head on and so she had a hard time believing that he understood what she was going through. Before she'd really decided what she wanted to say, she spoke. "What do you know about it Jake? I've never seen you run away from anything," she challenged. Then his last offer registered and she froze, stunned. He was offering to help her? To keep specific people away if she needed or wanted that? She gave an apologetic smile, "You know, I think I like that. Sometimes I need someone to talk to, apparently. And I'm sure I could trust you to help me get alone-time when I need it. You've got yourself a deal!" she said, offering her hand to shake. "But what can I do for you in return?"Jacob Kennington

Jake watched her carefully and saw her face harden. Apparently he'd said something to upset her. It didn't take long for her to explain and when she did it was obviously that she was angry and lashing out because she didn't know how else to respond. She glared as she waited for him to answer her questions, then at his offer to help her she smiled a little. To his surprise she actually accepted his offer. He shook her hand in return, "I'm sure I will be able to help you, but you don't have to do anything, except really listen to what I'm about to tell you. I want to answer your questions from a minute ago."He smiled a little, hoping to help her calm down a little. "You've never seen me run away from anything because I don't tell anyone about it. I don't wear my heart out on my sleeve, you know. I keep my feelings close to myself at all times," he waited a few seconds, wanting to let that sink in before he continued. "Still, I think knowing what happened to me might help you with the things you're going through. I'm trusting you though, so please don't tell anyone."Jake took a deep breath before trying to figure out how to explain this to her. He might as well just start. It's not a really long story, after all. "Well, this isn't the happiest story, but here it goes. Seven years ago, I lived with the Knights of Purity. I was training with them and doing very well in my work. Then one day I came home to find my mother talking with one of the leaders of the Knights of Purity. After a few seconds he nodded, pulled out a gun and shot her," he paused briefly when she gasped. "She died in my arms, but when I asked the man why he shot her he said that accidents happen."Jake closed his eyes, trying to hide the rage that he still felt. Every time he thought about what Sir Cabrera did to his mother, he wished he would have had the courage to challenge the man right then and there. Instead, he left. He took a deep breath. "That's when I ran away. Instead of avenging my mom and challenging the man, I buried her and left that night. I know I'm known as a tease, a jester of sorts, but a lot of it is a show. I try to not think about it because when I do, I become furious. I should've done something, but I didn't. I was a coward."He looked out at the lake, hoping that this would actually help her. "I understand what it's like to be mad at yourself, to be bitter but it doesn't help anything. You need to find people you trust and confide in them, allow them to help in the healing process. If you don't, it will just get worse and worse. Trust me." he finally stopped, angry and nervous and unsure about how she was going to respond. anaya isobel morne

Anaya couldn't believe that he was offering to help her and that he didn't want anything in return. That is, anything except for her listening to his story. Of course she would do that for him. She was surprised by how close she felt to Jake. She'd never felt this way before towards any confidante she had, even Winter, but she trusted him. She knew he would help and be her friend and she was glad. She needed a friend right now. She smiled at him, "Thanks. Of course I'll listen," she responded. She watched him as he began his story and nodded when he asked her to be confidential with what she learned. He was going to keep her secret, so she would definitely repay the favor and keep his. She'd never heard any of this before. She had no idea that Jake had once been a member of the Knights of Purity. At first, she was confused. Most Knight trainees stayed at least for the duration of their training, so what made him leave? She felt her heart break as she learned the truth. His mother was murdered in front of him? And even worse, the murder was explained as an accident. Without thinking, Anaya reached forward and put a hand on his arm, trying to offer him some form of comfort. She couldn't imagine what it would be like to lose a family member like that. Then his confession of his private guilt. Anaya instantly felt terrible. How could she attack and say that he'd never experienced loss like she had, that he didn't know what it was like to run away? She had no right to accuse him of not understanding, even though his story was different than hers. Still, she could tell that his self-recrimination was just as bad as hers was, if not worse. She listened to his advice and nodded her head slowly. She could hardly believe that Jake had been hiding this for so long. "I'm so sorry," she whispered. Then her curious nature took hold. "Have you ever told anyone about what happened? Or do you know how bad it is to keep it to yourself from experience?" she hoped her curious nature wouldn't offend him, but she had to know. If he had told someone before her, obviously it hadn't helped much with his healing. But if he hadn't ... then he was speaking from personal experience and he might even be pleading with her to help him heal. If that was the case, she wanted to know so she could help in any way she could. Jacob Kennington

As he relayed his story, Jake could see the guilt flooding through Anaya. Naturally she felt bad about what happened to his mother, but he also suspected that she felt bad about snapping at him earlier. There was no need for that. As her expression furrowed in concern, Jake reached out and placed a hand on her shoulder, "Hey, don't worry. No harm done." Then he let it go. He didn't want to linger. Then she asked her questions, as he expected. One couldn't hear a story like that and not have anything to ask. He took his hand off of her shoulder as he looked down the cliff face. "You're the first person I've told, so I guess I do know from experience." he turned his expression to face her. "Thank you for listening. I can't tell you how good it feels to finally get all that off my chest," he confessed. He smiled, feeling lighter than he'd felt in years. He couldn't believe that telling her his sad, short story had made him feel so much better. He looked at the young woman next to him. He never imagined that he'd be telling his story to someone today, but he was glad that he ran into her. Glad for the opportunity to help someone the way he wished he'd been helped years before. anaya isobel morne

Anaya felt so embarrassed. She couldn't believe she'd been so rude to him! However, at the same time she was glad. Maybe if she hadn't been so defensive, he wouldn't have shared his story with her, and she needed to here it. For some reason, Anaya had been so caught up in her problems that she forgot other people had their own problems and worries, which was something she needed to be reminded of. She took a deep breath, "Thanks for trusting me with that. And thank you for listening to me and not judging me. And for offering to help me," she smiled as she turned to face him head on. "Man, I guess I have lots to thank you for today. I'll have you know I haven't thanked anyone in a real long time, so you're really bringing me back to old habits," Anaya teased, feeling lighter than she had in a year. She hadn't really told him everything, but at the same time she didn't need to. Not now, anyway. There would be time for that later. Right now she just wanted to sit with him and look out at the lake in peace. Maybe a little playful banter. It'd been too long since she'd done that. Jacob Kennington

She's a maiden in a tower. A damsel ... in distress. I was born for this moment.

Jake smiled, relieved by Anaya's attitude. He hadn't known what to expect and now he could relax. "Aww, don't worry about it. We all go through our moments," he teased as she thanked him repeatedly. "Don't worry, it's only a phase. It'll pass soon and then you'll never have to thank anyone again." He winked at her, glad he made a friend today, of all days. He'd never expected to run into her when he left Excalibur that morning and he never would have imagined the conversation they just had. He laughed, for no reason, then mumbled seriously, "I wish things could stay this way, but with that battle looming who knows what's going to happen." He coked his head slightly to the left. "You're welcome to stay with us, I'm sure. If you want to you can join the fight. Or you can leave as soon as your friend is well again. Your call, but if you stay I'll be here for ya. Just let me know if you need anything."-The End-
