The chief of Excalibur had spent many years to become intimidating. And she had found that it worked.
Chief Elin Dragon-Rider sat at the base of the mountain. She looked over the small establishment she had dubbed Excalibur. All hidden beneath the camouflage of trees homes and small farms dotted the ground. People bustled to and fro, working on different projects and helping one another. Dragons could be seen walking through the streets, which were wide enough to compensate for them. Dragons and humans, living together in peace. When she was a girl she could not have imagined this. She never would have guessed she would find this in her lifetime. Then she met Ryagin. And her life changed forever. Now, at 125 she was the oldest living human, and not a wrinkle to show for it.
The people she fought to protect lived with their families and friends. They ate dinner together and shared their lives. She sat with Ryagin in their cave, much as they had done for the last 100 years. She had contact with each of her lueitenants, her captains, and many of the new recruits. But there were common people living down there as well. She needed to know them. How was she to know them if she was not among them?
Standing, she brushed the dirt off of her clothing. She wore dark leather pants and boots to match with a loose shirt that tucked in. The sleeves had been cut off, showing the scars on her arms that decorated her muscles. She had armor that she could wear, but she never did. She found it inhibited more than helped. The longer she was bonded to Ryagin, the more she discovered. She could go faster, longer, and harder than she ever could before. She felt her body changing over the century they had been together. Changing into something more lithe and strong, something that could ride a dragon for hours and not grow weary. What other changes would come to her?
She pondered these thoughts as she strode toward the town, today she was going to meet the people she protected, and help them. She would be one of them today.
