Another night of the same bad dream, another morning of regret, and another day of just trying to push it all out of her head.
She set up another series of practice dummies on the far side of the training area and took a number of steps away from the lineup, silently counting off then further steps than she had taken on the round before. Lacey turned to face the target dummies and took a deep breath. Reaching into a pouch on her belt she pulled a small stone, a playing card, and a short metal bar. One by one, she charged them with kinetic energy through her hands and threw them into her targets.
In quick succession, the three target dummies burst open in a flash of light and sound, adding to the small piles of straw that were collecting around the dummy stands. Lacey watched the charred straw settle for a moment before walking away toward the sparring section of the training ground. She needed a moving target to practice with.
That thought in mind, Lacey looked about the section for someone to spar with.

Mmmmm....barbecue.
That was his first thought when the distant sound of explosions reached his ears. His second thought was the realization that he'd only been dreaming about barbecue, and that was a saddening situation indeed. Sun was up, shimmering through the leaves of the tree to splash across the floor of the large treehouse. The Overlook, as it had been called by several people, was high up in one of the largest trees in the area, a tree that formed a sort of hub for the roads that lived above the ground and beneath the sky—his roads alone.
Ranulf sat up and stretched, a jaw-cracking yawn escaping him.
Wait, he'd heard explosions.
Ranulf sifted through memory, trying to figure out where it had come from. Kinda sounded like...the training area? Oooooh, a fight! Ranulf himself rarely participated in such things, but he did love to watch the fights. He grinned and rolled off the pile of animal hides that he called a bed. He paused long enough to swing his overcoat onto his shoulders, not bothering to grab a shirt to wear under it, and rushed off into the great tree, hopping from branch to branch, tree to tree, like he was made for it. Indeed, he could probably navigate through the forest for about a mile in any direction blindfolded at this point.
A scant two minutes later, and he'd arrived at the clearing from which he could see precisely one person and three smoking piles of target dummy. He stopped at the lowest branch and almost wilted in disappointment, smacking himself in the forehead. “I gave up a dream about BARBECUE to come see the aftermath of a little percussive maintenance? Why, universe?! Why couldn't you just let me dream on?!” he shouted, shaking a fist at the sky.

'My, what a silly boy.' Lacey thought to herself, her head tilted as she watched the ramblings of the fellow Rider.
She watched him with curious eyes that couldn't understand. "Your words make sense, but I do not follow their meaning." she said in her own quiet voice. "Our dreams are memories and hopes and fears displayed as the mind tries to reconcile with itself all while the body is resting or the senses are awake and distracted. I'm sorry if my target practice has fooled you. Perhaps you would like to come down from that branch and spar? Might work up a real appetite."
For a moment, she was lost in a thought about comprehending dreams, but Lacey brought herself back to the moment and added a challenge to her sparring offer.
"... Or can't you hit a girl?"

Ranulf stopped his lamentations of lost dreams as the woman approached and started talking about what he’d said. And then, because he lacked a filter in his brain, he said that thing anyone else would have thought.
“Aw no, I just woke up, I’m not ready for contemplation, even if it comes with a nice rack attached.” He rubbed at his eyes some more, but froze when he realized she had asked to spar, looking down at her from the tree. Ranulf rarely sparred with people, since his powers were unique among Excalibur, so people tended not to get much from training with him. He started to point this out, when she asked him if he was unable to hit a girl. He blinked…and then he giggled. “You should meet my sister sometime. I’m fine with hitting girls. I have objections to them hitting back though.”
Still, he was nothing if not accommodating, particularly to women with aforementioned nice racks. He shrugged off his coat, leaving him in nothing but the baggy black pants he always wore, and stepped off the branch, dropping ten feet into a roll that prevented him from taking the shock of impact. Then he stretched, feeling his muscles and joints, making sure nothing was out of the ordinary. Satisfied, he turned and shrugged at the woman. “So uh…take your best shot I guess?”

The first misogynist obscenity she could forget. The second one annoyed her. Abuse was not in the cards for Lacey to tolerate readily. By the time the third statement was out of his mouth, she was growing angry.
Fingers bristling with bright reddish light, Lacey rapidly reached to one of the pouches on her belt and began to step backwards. The step, she cut short in favor of something more aggressive. Lacey turned the step into the beginning of a set of consecutive back-flips, each including their own volley of energy-brazen items cast in the area just around where Ranulf had dropped into a roll. Each small thing she had cast exploded into a myriad of small fire-cracker like bursts. None of them were meant to deal damage and all of them were meant to make a little light show and lower of the pig's expectations of what she could do. Ranulf's powers were fairly unknown to her, though she knew what she could do and that was enough.
"Oh, but why should I waste a good opportunity for you to take objection, boy? Prove to me that I am inferior. Prove that I am nothing more than an object." she challenged in a matter-of-fact taunt.
Without making the action obvious, Lacey pulsed a sharp surge of energy into the ground through her feet. Her powers letting her control that energy, she guided it underneath the ground surface - invisible to those above - and into the tree just above and behind Ranulf. The branch that he had come down from burst open into a shower of wooden spikes and sliver-worthy bits, and to Lacey the match had really begun.

He remembered as he said he was alright with hitting girls that Elin had forbidden him from ever hitting someone in the arena. Reason being, he couldn’t very well keep up with other Excalibur members in a spar without using his powers, but when he did use his powers, he had the physical strength to injure or kill with a single hit. Therefore, when sparring, he had to stick to throws and grabs, which weren’t much fun to him—not that breaking bones was fun, mind. That was another reason he rarely entered the sparring matches and just watched instead. And then she was off, flipping away in a fashion that would have had him staring in interest at her curves if she hadn’t been littering the ground with miniscule objects, glowing with a reddish light. He could feel the energy—kinetic, these were bombs. Too small to do any real damage though. So he stood there, watching them pop all around him. Very interesting, how some dragon powers worked. He wondered if she could do different colors? But no…fireworks would be bad for Excalibur, wouldn’t they? What with the whole wanting to remain hidden and all?
Her words derailed his train of thought, and confusion made itself obvious in his expression. “Uh…prove what now?” Energy flowed through the ground: he felt it, it hadn’t been converted and so he could absorb it, but it was too deep for him to reach unless he shifted his entire arm and tried to tear through to it, and by then it would be too late anyway. He turned to look up at the tree, then suddenly moved away as he lost that feeling of raw dragon force, just before the large branch exploded. Aww man. He liked that branch too. “They’ll have to cut that tree down now,” he said, talking to himself now, as he walked up to the tree and examined the gaping wound where a large branch had once been. “Better that letting it die to wood-rot and be useless. Now where am I gonna sit?”
Oh right, the spar. Excalibur’s vanguard looked around the arena, rubbing his head. “So, I’m not actually supposed to hit you, I’ll have to figure out a different…oh hey there we go.” He jogged over to one side of the area, where a large collection of tools and weapons lay, and rummaged around for a bit before triumphantly pulling out a twelve-foot length of chain. Chains were his weapon of choice, but they could also be used to tie people up, a handy alternative to breaking bones. Let power flow. His body shifted slightly, mass increasing, muscles become larger and more defined, as the power of Grounded flowed through him, boosting his strength and speed beyond the limits of a normal human.
He turned to the girl and shrugged again, wriggling his toes a little to grip the ground better. “Okay, I’m ready now!” He bundled the chain up in his right hand, swinging a length of it in slow, lazy circles with his left, as he considered how best to approach somebody who could make things explode.

So he was as unimpressive personally as he was socially. 'What have I gotten myself into', she asked herself, while taking a deep breath.
The calming breath was perfect. It sharpened her wits instead of her senses. If he was serious about not hitting her, then she would at least try to disarm him or at least find a way to immobilize him. She slowly and silently unzipped her red-leather jacket and withdrew from her belt one of her favorite weapons: a traditional Old-Japanese sai. She only owned the one, as finding a second or getting a second made were both rather difficult. Cracking the knuckles of her free-hand, she assumed a combat stance and moved on his affirmation. Thinking that his commentary would continue (and continue to annoy her), Lacey kept silent.
Sai held backhanded and out in front of her face, she charged at him straight on. The circles he was making with the chain were smart on his part, though this was hardly the first time she had faced an enemy armed as such. Her free hand reached into one of her belt's containers and grabbed a number of copper pipe shavings as she got closer. These she charged as quickly as she released them, scattering the shavings between them with a quick toss. Lacey went into a slide on the souls of her boots that slowed her momentum and gave her effects a moment to work.
The tiny shrapnel glowed red, but exploded as a myriad of small fireworks of blue and green, all about a meter from the boy's face. Distractions placed, she took her opportunity to strike, releasing the leftover momentum in a lunge aiming to catch her opponent's weapon-bearing wrist between the prongs of her sai. Lacey could not see if her target was making a move to retaliate.
