The moment she heard herself speak, she regretted it. "How did you know?" Really? What kind of an idiotic question was that? Anaya berated herself, wishing that she hadn't said anything about it. He probably recognized her the moment she approached him and Jankin and here she was treating him like an idiot. With good reason- she was an idiot. She knew this very, very well. Though most of the time, she avoided the thoughts. Of course he recognized her. His words interrupted her mental annoyance- directed at herself, of course- and instead threw her mind into a flurry of confusion. He'd been looking for her?? Instantly Anaya tensed in his arms, struggling to accept the implication of his question, though at the same time she believed it right away. He was looking for her? For a long time, clearly. Maybe even since she first disappeared? Her eyes searched his as she tried to come up with an answer to his question, but how could she? How could she tell him that the reason he'd had to look so long was because she was hiding, because she was ashamed of who she'd become: a coward. A coward who ran away from her fears, her life, her home. She didn't deserve to have anyone looking for her, much less the man of her dreams. Still, she didn't want him to see what she'd become: how broken down and torn apart she was on the inside. It wasn't just the loss of Illyana that did this to her. It was that loss and all Anaya had done after to try and bring peace to her soul, though none of it worked. She knew now that she brought the pain on herself, but she welcomed it. She deserved to feel the pain, deserved the anguish and the heartbreak. She deserved it all for failing when it mattered most. She broke their eye contact, turning her face away from his. She couldn't stand to look at him right now. The whisper escaped her lips before she even realized what she was saying, "Why would you be looking for me? I'm weak, a deserter, and I ruin everything I touch. No one should be" -looking for me, she meant to say the words out loud, but her voice broke off and she couldn't bring it back to finish her sentence. She closed her eyes, refusing to turn back and look back at him. This was the weakest she'd felt in months, and she couldn't believe it was right in front of the person that she wanted to see her as strong. She couldn't look at him, couldn't bear to. She wished she could be anywhere but here right now- anywhere but in Perseus' strong, gentle, careful arms- but there was no changing what had already been done. She was so distracted that she didn't even notice as a single tear slipped gently down her cheek. PERSEUS CAREW

Perseus couldn't hardly believe that she was here in his arms. He had dreamed of finding her, dreamed of the happy reunion between her and her sister, with him. But he had never imagined it like this. She seemed to be beating herself up, she was pulling away from him, physically and emotionally. He had a feeling she had pulled away from everyone emotionally.
Why would he be looking for her? She was weak? Where was she even getting this from? She was one of the strongest people he had known. But then he remembered, her dragon had died. He knew that the death of someone you shared your mind with was traumatic and impossible to deal with on your own. That was probably what she had tried to do, what she had been trying to do for the entire year she had been missing. She closed her eyes and turned away from him, a tear running down her cheek. "Anaya, how could you think---I wanted to look for you."

Anaya could hardly believe her ears and she turned back so she was looking at him once more. He wanted to look for her? Why? It's not like they were particularly close or anything before she left. She didn't understand why they were having such a deep conversation right now ... She wanted to ask him why he was looking for her again, but she was tired of acting so weak in front of him. She needed to show some backbone. Or something other than wimpiness. She wished she was sitting behind him again. Then she wouldn't have to be looking into his penetrating eyes. Eyes that made her want to confess everything. Eyes that seemed to read her thoughts and see through to her soul. "You wanted to ... for me?" she breathed, not even realizing that she said it out loud. Her thoughts were spinning. She wanted to be strong, to seem like a confident young lady that could take care of herself, but at the same time all she wanted was him. She wanted Percy to hold her and want her and care for her. Was that too much to ask for? A part of her didn't think so, but the other part of her didn't think she deserved him. Angry at the stupid thoughts that she couldn't control, Anaya turned her head and buried it in his chest. She took a few deep, calming breaths and then muttered against his shirt, "Can you see my friends yet," she asked, changing the subject completely. PERSEUS CAREW

Thoughts jumbled and sufficiently perplexed, Perseus was almost glad when she diverted the conversation. Yes, he wanted to talk to her, find out why she had been gone so long and why she had such a low opinion of herself. But her friends were in danger. And right now, with her face buried in his shirt and the warmth of her body so close... Focus, friends, life-saving, hero business. He took a deep breath and looked out over the landscape. Her friends could be anywhere but if they were hurt... somewhere they could hide. "Where were they when you left them? In buildings? Tree cover? There are only so many places Jankin can land and in the middle of the forest is not one of them."He looked back down at her, she seemed to be trying to pull herself together. Well, he couldn't blame her, could he? He wasn't doing much better himself. But he had received more practice at working through hard feelings than she had apparently. anaya isobel morne(Because I love you, I did this first )

Her eyes were still closed, her face still buried in Perseus' chest when Anaya finally gained control of herself again. She had to remember that she wasn't doing this for herself, she was here for Winter. This was no time to lose her head, or her heart. She took a deep breath to strengthen her resolve, trying to figure out what she should do now, when Perseus asked where her friends were. Instinctively, she reached out to find James. If it was easy to sense his mind, then he was nearby. If not ... well she wasn't going to try contacting him again. At least, not after what happened only a few minutes ago. She did not want to pass out again. She found his mind instantly and without thinking she started to move. Slightly fighting against Perseus' hold on her, she reached up and grabbed his shoulder, using that to pull herself to a sitting position. Then she held onto his other arm to help keep herself balanced. Once she was sitting, she started searching the ground for any sign of the dots that would be her friends. Absentmindedly, she answered Perseus, though her attention was focused on her search. "They should be anywhere around here. They weren't hiding, they were traveling towards the Excalibur Camp. I went ahead to try and get permission for ... " she trailed off when she finally a groups of dark spots that she thought might be them. She stiffened and held her breath as she squinted, trying to be sure that she was right before she said anything to Perseus. "James ..." Anaya paused when she saw the dots stop moving. Maybe it was just her imagination; maybe that wasn't them. Well ... she should check anyway. "Is that you?" She knew that he heard her, but it took him a few seconds to respond. " .... crap. Duck, Anaya!" Anaya froze. She knew she needed to do something, but she couldn't. He grip on Perseus tightened as she tried to force herself to react to James' warning. Then she snapped herself out of her momentary freeze. "Perseus! Jankin! Watch out; that's them!" She said, pointing towards the dots and cringing from whatever was headed their way. She wished there was something she could do, but she couldn't. She was helpless here. Perseus and Jankin would have to protect all three of them from this one. PERSEUS CAREW

Perseus felt her grip tighten and for some reason he became more alert. Then the warning came. Jankin reacted first rolling in the air. Perseus' hold on Anaya became like iron as they came out of the spin. Something shot past them, very close. Perseus thought he felt something brush his cheek. Jankin must have felt it as well because he was suddenly shooting toward the ground, the water boiling in his stomach. He was getting ready to shoot a spray of scalding water at whoever had thought to harm them. Perseus shifted Anaya in his grip, placing her just behind him and making sure she could still hold onto his waist. Landing at this speed was going to be tricky, especially with Jankin enraged like he was.
"Jankin! They are friends! They didn't know!" He was standing in his stirrups as he leaned forward. His mind slipped into Jankin's as he pulled up hard, landing softly on the ground. Perseus unclipped his legs from the side of his saddle and jumped down, reaching up to help Anaya as well.
"You are sure they are your friends?" he asked. He had been in more than his fair share of ambushes .

Anaya held on tight as Jankin began rolling in the air and zoomed towards their attackers. A part of her was nervous for James and Winter and her friends, but the other part of her was entirely focused on keeping herself from falling, or something like that. Then Perseus pushed her so she was behind him and she couldn't hide her relief- not that he'd see it. He was obviously too focused on Jankin. She wrapped her arms around his waist and held on with all she had. This was an unfamiliar feeling to her. Anaya was scared. She'd never been on a dragon (other than Illyana) while it was so angry and she didn't know what to expect. She wondered if Perseus was going to be able to keep his promise and make sure her friends ended up safe when his dragon was so upset. She heard Perseus yelling at his dragon and gave a short sigh in relief. Maybe her friends would be safe. She hoped. Jankin landed hard, so hard that it knocked the breath out of Anaya. She tried to discreetly hide the fact that she was gasping for breath. Then Perseus jumped off and moved to help her down. She froze. How was she supposed to let him help her down? After a second, she reached forward and put her hands on his shoulders, assuming her would just lift her down. He heart pounded ferociously when he touched her and she fought to hide her reaction from him. Once her feel were on the ground, he asked his question and she was instantly annoyed. Maybe it was because she was still tingling from her touch and maybe it was because she didn't like his question, but she ignored it. She already said that it was them. She turned to face the group that was a short distance away and then felt bad for ignoring him. She turned her head so she could see Perseus. "It's them," she said before walking towards the group. She didn't know if Perseus was following her or not and she didn't want to turn and see. She knew it was ridiculous, but she felt conflicted around him. She wanted to be close to him, to talk to him, but she also didn't. A part of her wanted to hide from him and make sure she'd never see him again, but at the same time she wanted the opposite. Her mind was so jumbled up and confused, so she tried to distract herself. She rushed to Winter's makeshift gurney and looked down at her friend. Winter was unconscious and so, so pale. Anaya's stomach dropped. After all that happened, after all of Winter's help during the last year, Anaya didn't know what she would do if her friend died here. She reached forward and pushed Winter's hair to the side, sensing as James moved up behind her. "Sorry Isobel. We didn't realize it was you." Anaya winced when he called her Isobel. Of course, she'd asked him to, but it seemed silly now that Perseus already knew who she really was. Anaya ignored the apology. She couldn't say it was all right because it wasn't. Her friends had almost been killed because they attacked Jankin. "How is she? Is she getting worse or will she last until ..." she trailed off as she watched her friend. This wasn't the Winter she knew. It felt wrong to see winter so still and silent and pale. So wrong. She had to do something about it. She turned around, looking for Perseus. Once she saw him, she shrugged and held out her arms like she was asking a question. In all reality she was. Was he going to help Winter? PERSEUS CAREW

There were some things in this world that he never got used to. Getting shot at was one of them. Honestly, it may have been the worst thing about being a dragon rider. Luckily it was the only bad thing about being a dragon rider. In his mind he felt Jankin agree with his thoughts.
Percy stood next to Jankin, Anaya was standing a few feet in front of him talking with her friends that tried to kill him and his dragon. He saw her friend, a pale woman was laying on a makeshift gurney .... and she looked awful. Not in an unattractive way, okay yes in an unattractive way. But unattractive in the fact that she had the gleam of sweat from a fever and the pasty white of someone who had an infected wound.
Anaya turned to face him, and he realized he hadn't been listening to the conversation she and her "friends" (anyone who tried to shoot you out of the sky had better have a really good reason, especially if they call themselves your friends) had been having. But the look on her face, and another glance at the sickly girl and he knew what she was asking.
Instead of answering, he turned on his heal and took the three steps to Jankin's saddle. He climbed up into it then twisted around, unbuckling a small box from the back of the saddle. He crawled down and went over to the girl.
"There is only so much I know how to do, but I can try to get her fever down and possibly start the infection moving from her body. But she will have to fly back with me on Jankin if she is going to make it." he instructed Anaya and her friends.
Even as he spoke he closed his eyes, he wasn't a healer, by any means, but his connection with Jankin and his abilities with water had given him a pretty good idea of how to use his power to heal at least minor things. This wasn't minor, but he could help. Spreading his fingers wide, palms down hovering over her torso a small stream of water began to spin under his hands. It honestly didn't look like much to anyone else, but he and Jankin could feel it working. It pushed the infection to the surface, away from her heart, and a small bit of color came into her cheeks.
Unfortunately, Percy didn't know how to make the effects last. He didn't know how to permanently root out infection and so it would spread again, however she would make it back to the excalibur camp.
"I'll take her back to camp, then I can come back and show you the way." He pushed himself to standing, shrugging off the wave of weakness that always followed a healing. "If you head north west you will be going in the general direction."
OOC:....ooops My fingers slipped. I am sure you don't mind.

Anaya's stomach was churning as Perseus turned to Jankin and grabbed something. Then he said he would try to help Winter before taking her to Excalibur. Anaya let out a breath of relief as she watched her hero work to save her dear friend. She looked closely, trying to see what he was doing, but she couldn't. What she could see was that Winter looked a little better and Anaya's heart rose with hope. Maybe her friend would make it through this. Perseus stood up slowly as he explained that he would take Winter back to camp and then return for them and Anaya's mouth fell open in surprise. It was stupid, really. She should have been expecting him to leave, to take Winter with him, but she didn't. Further, she didn't want him to leave her. She'd only just found him, for goodness' sake! After a moment, she closed her mouth promptly, hoping he hadn't seen her reaction. She glanced at him, then looked away quickly. Her eyes darted around, looking at Winter, James, her other friends, the clearing, anything but him again. She didn't want him to see how upset she was now. She recognized extra moisture in her eyes and blinked it away. Nope. That was not going to happen. She tried to lock her heart away, but a part of it tugged at her and she couldn't deny to herself that she didn't want him to leave. He had to; she knew that, but she didn't want him to go all the same. She glanced at him before lowering her gaze to the ground. "Get control of yourself," she scolded before she walked up to him. Placing a slightly shaking hand on his arm, she forced herself to look into his eyes. "Thank you," she said simply, her eyes searching his. "Thank you," she repeated before stepping back and nodding her head. "Come on James," she called out to her friends that were behind her. "Let's pack up and see how far away we can get before they get back." Anaya heard her friends moving from behind her but she didn't pay attention to them. She was still watching Perseus, who was only a step away. PERSEUS CAREW(OOC: Ok, it was hard to keep it this short, not going to lie. Why is there so much going on in her head??)

Anaya's face was heartbroken when he said he was going to leave her. His own feelings were somewhat similar to hers. But it was only for a short time, and if he didn't take her friend then she would die. As Anaya thanked him, he squeezed her hand. "It is my honor." he told her softly, his eyes locking onto hers. Then he did something that he never would have considered before, he kissed her hand. Before he could question his resolve he scooped Winter up in his arms and then climbed up Jankin's tail. He secured her in the saddle in front of him and sat behind her. He turned to the small party he was leaving behind and waved to them. "I shall be back for you by the days end." he promised. --- The flight to Excalibur was uneventful, though he swore he could feel Winter's infection returning. He was incredibly thankful for Jankin's speed and the fact that there were better healers at Excalibur. Upon landing, he left Winter with the healers, explained what he had done and what he knew of her condition, then raced out and jumped back into his saddle. He didn't know why he was so anxious to see Anaya again, but he was. He retrieved a large basket that Jankin could carry in his claws to make sure all of her friends could come back in one trip. It would cause Jankin to fly significantly slower but that would be just fine now that Winter was being helped. The flight back to Anaya seemed to take ages longer then the previous journey he had taken. He was relieved when he saw her and her small band cresting a hill. Jankin landed awkwardly so as to not squish the basket and Perseus jumped off his back, a crazy smile on his face, though why it was there he couldn't say. "The healers are working on her as we speak. She may even be healed by the time we return." He reported to the friends, his eyes on Anaya. anaya isobel morne

Anaya couldn't help but stare at Perseus as he grabbed Winter and climbed onto Jankin. A small smile played at the corner of her lips as she tried to understand what had just happened. Did he really just kiss her? Well, her hand, but a kiss was a kiss wasn't it? Maybe it meant that he might- no. She had to stop thoughts like that before they got too far. She shouldn't let herself hope for too much from him. After all, she knew nothing about his current life. Maybe he was ... courting someone? Ugh. She gave a short wave as he shouted his farewell and promise to the group before taking off, Jankin flying furiously fast. Anaya couldn't help but feel like the promise was meant just for her, though she had no proof of this. She watched their outline until they were out of sight. "Goodbye," she whispered to herself when she could no longer see them. She turned around to see that all her friends were ready to go. "Let's start. Northwest, right?" she asked, but it wasn't really a question and they understood that. Everyone started marching Northwest. Normally Anaya would be leading her group, but not today. Her thoughts were too confusing and she decided to take up the rear. Did she really want to do this? Go back to Excalibur? Even though it was for Winter, the thought made her nervous. She should run for it now, run from her strengthening feelings for Perseus, run from her past, run from the future and everything that was happening. She didn't run. Instead she walked for hours, following her group and hardly realizing how tired she was, being too consumed in her thoughts. Thoughts that were centered on Perseus Carew and Winter. Worries about her friend seemed to creep up on hopeful thoughts of Perseus, to the point her mind felt numb. Feelings of joy and anxiety, anticipation and dread battled within her as she tried to sort through them. She sensed him before she saw his profile, his and Jankins, though something was strange about it. When they grew closer she realized what it was. They were carrying a basket. Percy was planning on bringing everyone back to Excalibur with him! Finally he landed and Anaya hurried to catch up with the rest of the group, arriving as he explained that Winter was alright. Without even thinking about what she was doing, she pushed through her friends, too elated about the news to think straight. She ran straight for Perseus and once she reached him she threw her arms around his neck, hugging him tightly. After a moment she pulled away from him, whispering "Thank you so much," before giving him a quick kiss on the cheek and resuming her hug. A few seconds later her mind caught up with her body. What did she just do? She stiffened her hug and began to pull away, mortified at what she'd done. "Sorry, I just- I mean, I wasn't- I don't know how that happened," she uncharacteristically stumbled over her words, wishing she could disappear. PERSEUS CAREW

Jankin nudged his mind, he was uncomfortable on the ground with the basket. He had to be very careful to not squish it. But Perseus didn't notice. Anaya was hugging him, so he wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her closer, enjoying the moment. Then she kissed his cheek. He froze and his lips parted as if he was going to say something, but there was nothing that needed to be said. That is until she started to pull away. His arms tightened around her. "No, don't be sorry." he rebutted, then realized that it could be very awkward for her friends to watch the two hug so he loosened his arms and let her pull away. "Really, it is just fine." his hand gently touched his cheek as he said the words. "Uh, we should probablly get on Jankin, he is getting impatient." he said and turned around quickly, he was going to embarrass himself in front of Anaya's friend. Well then he supposed it would be no different from anyone in Excalibur. He was almost to the point where he just didn't get embarrassed anymore. He walked over to the basket and began helping Anaya's friends into the basket. Perhaps on purpose, the basket was full before Anaya could get it. "Looks like you will have to ride with me up top." he told her, gesturing to the saddle. anaya isobel morne

Anaya smiled at how nice he was being. She loved the feel of his arms around her, but of course it couldn't last long. Way too soon he was letting her go and Anaya took the hint, pulling away and turning her attention to her friends. Some of them were smiling at her, but others looked really confused. They'd never seen her act so friendly to someone before. Then he turned away and started helping everyone into the basket. Anaya hung back, hoping that maybe if she was the last one he'd let her ride behind him on Jankin instead of riding in the basket. She really had no interest being in a basket, for pretty obvious reasons. Then after the last of her friends was in the basket he turned to face her. "Looks like you will have to ride with me up top." He said and she couldn't help but grin at him, hardly believing that he did exactly what she wanted him to. "Oh I do, do I? Sounds like a chore," she teased, hardly believing how easily it came to her. She hadn't teased anyone like this in ages! Anyone except for Peter and James, that is, but they were like brothers to her. She gestured to Jankin, "Well you'd better go first so you can help me up. I'm not sure I could climb up all on my own." Anaya's heart swelled when she took his hand and then settled behind him on the saddle. She put her arms around him, holding on tight and pretending that her friends weren't feet below her. She just wanted to be alone with him. PERSEUS CAREW

This was playing out way too well. Nothing ever happened this perfectly in his life. He was just waiting for some dragon to swoop in and pick her up as if she were nothing. He glanced to the air to make sure his imagination didn't come true. That would have been the worst!
"I think you just wanted help up so you could hold my hand." he said before thinking. He could feel Jankin do the dragon equivalent of a facepalm beneath him. But hey, this was who he was, and she might as well know that he made bad jokes all the time, serious situation or not.
Jankin took off, wavering slightly with the weight of his extra passengers. He heard the people below give out cries of alarm as the dragon veered ot the left to try and gain a headwind. Percy was suddenly very worried about Jankin. He hadn't considered what adding 400ish more pounds of weight would do to Jankin's flying patterns.
Jankin! he thought desperately.
The dragon snorted at him in annoyance, then flapped his wings several times and bought them more altitude and more wind. The dragon leveled out and began to make their way back to the camp.
Perseus settled back in the saddle, leaning momentarily against Anaya. He had nearly forgotten she was there. Leaning forward quickly, he glanced back at her apologetically. "We're all good now!" he yelled over the deafening wind, feeling it rip his words from his mouth. Hopefully she understood what he said...if she didn't, it was no big loss.

Anaya bit her lip to try to hide her smile. She couldn't remember the last time she'd felt so good. She didn't know what it was, being near Excalibur, near Perseus, so near to the life that she'd loved and she knew that pretty soon she'd feel the drop in spirits, but right now she was happier than she'd been in a very long time. Without thinking she answered Perseus. "Well, can you blame me? Who wouldn't use that as an excuse?" Wait. Did she really say that? She looked away as she felt her cheeks get warm. Jankin took off and swayed a little bit. Anaya heard her friends call out, obviously worried and she wrapped her arms more tightly around Perseus as her response. She wouldn't be able to forgive herself if something happened to them and she knew it. Then she realized what she was doing. She loosened her grip on him, actually letting go and reaching behind her to hold onto Jankin's saddle. What else was she supposed to do? Then he leaned back against her and Anaya didn't know what to do! Her heard was racing and every part of her wanted to confess what she felt for him, but she couldn't. And wouldn't. It was the first time she'd seen him in a year, for goodness' sake! He shouted something at her, but she couldn't understand what it was. Acting on impulse, she reached out to him telepathically. "You know, we could always talk this way," she suggested with a shrug, until she remembered. Most people didn't take too kindly to her speaking telepathically with them without their permission. Oops. Anxiously she tried to fix it ... telepathically. How else was she supposed to communicate with him? "I- I mean, only if you want to, you know, talk telepathically," she paused for a second- not giving him time to respond- before freaking out. "I'm sorry, I know, most people aren't comfortable with this. Uh, you know ... umm ... never mind. It was a silly idea. Forget about it," she whispered to his mind anxiously. She was too embarrassed to let her thoughts express themselves any louder. Was she always going to be embarrassed around him? PERSEUS CAREW
